According to the results, 19 percent of Republicans indicated they had a favorable view of Kim with 68 percent saying they had an unfavorable view (12 percent of voters overall had a favorable view of Kim, compared to 75 percent who viewed him unfavorably). That compared slightly better than the perception of Pelosi, who had a 17 percent favorable, 72 percent unfavorable rating among self-identified Republicans.

The U.S. can't come back from this. One in five people in one of the two major political parties have a favorable view of a person who is rightly almost universally reviled around the globe for his shocking inhumanity.

Twenty percent of one party may not sound like much, because it really only amounts to about 10% of voters (very roughly). But it's like having cancer in 10% of your body. It doesn't mean you're 90% cancer-free, it means you're fucking terminal.

Consider too that 83% of Republicans strongly support Trump, and 63% have a favorable view of Dubbya. For the latter son of a bitch, you would've have a hard time finding anyone who'd admit to ever voting for him ten years ago. By the time he left office his approval rating was below 25%.

I think this can be traced back to a few things, but primarily Rush Limbaugh and the subsequent rise of shameless conservative media. History is going to show that the appeal to a segment of the population who were inclined to authoritarianism is what destroyed the United States. The hatred directed towards women, minorities, the poor, immigrants, higher education, and concepts of common good has been churned out every hour of every day for 30 years. There are no shades of grey, just a thick line of black where everything within that line is good; on the other side is a thick line of white, where everything is bad.

This isn't going to go away. Trump, along with Fox/etc. have already set up not just the base, but nearly everyone who votes Republican, to utterly disregard the results of Mueller's investigation. It won't matter what the conclusions are. On the contrary, GOP politicians will be able to side with Trump and bring out voters because of it.

And here's how it's going to end:

Trump has primed his supporters for it, and the Democrats, who can't seem to muster up a defense to anything, are too weak to stop it.

Yet another thing they were always accusing Obama of preparing to do that they would support with Fuck La' Orange'.

Repealing the Fairness Doctrine really paved the way for an entire media arm to become the propaganda machine of the right. They were completely prepared for it when it was repealed, and have used it to great advantage.

There's part of me that says that this simply could not happen. But the seating of Gorsuch over Garland, and how easily the right got away with that, otherwise has me concerned. If they can get away with that...what else will they get away with?

In a recent poll, about the same percentage feel Trump can pardon himself. Don’t know why the poll doesn’t ask if Obama could.

I find the OP poll results encouraging because I would have expected at least a 30% favorable view from Republicans.

Well, only 68% of Republicans viewed him unfavorably. That’d get you to your 32% of WTF is wrong with right-wingers Level.

Did they poll Democrats about Kim's popularity?

I don't know.

Republicans view Pelosi less favorably than Kim. Democrats view Mitch McConnel more favorably than Kim. I suppose you can draw inferences from that.

Trump views Kim as being a strong leader with a great personality, so now, so do a significant percentage of Trump supporters. Trump is POTUS and Republicans control Congress. They have a majority on SCOTUS.

"But what about the Democrats?"

My house is burning down and the fire department just told me they're not gonna show up. But what about my neighbor's dog who barks too much?

Did they poll Democrats about Kim's popularity?
Yes. they did. Although the results are not directly reported in the OP article, there is a link to all of the tables at the bottom of the linked article. The results for Kim are table 34. There are 3 favorable categories : "very favorable" (Democrats 2%, Republicans 3%), "somewhat favorable" (D 4%, R 10%) , and "leans towards favorable" (D 2% and R 7%) or 10% of Democrats with some sort of favorable response compared to 20% of Republicans. According to the table, 380 Democrats responded and 308 Republicans.

Just to add...

It's interesting to try and pinpoint the moment it really turned insane. Or at least some seminal moment that allowed the U.S. to get to this point. For example, today the Trumps and Anne Coulter are calling the children being separated from their parents at the border "crisis actors." This is so fucking crazy, so beyond rational belief... it's something that may be unprecedented in modern history--at least on this scale. Even when Jim Jones told his followers that the U.S. government was coming to get them, there was some tangible nugget of truth to it. But here, the "child actors" thing is an utterly preposterous fabrication that can't withstand the most cursory scrutiny. It's not even worth looking into.

But republican voters--at least enough of them to matter, now believe it. It allows them to dehumanize these people, which in turn opens the door to not only negligently cause their suffering, but to actively foment measures to cause it.

IMO, it was the Swift Boat Campaign that showed conservatives what was possible.

Bush II served in the Air National Guard Reserves during Vietnam. He actually didn't show up for a year at one point. Meanwhile, John Kerry was actually in Vietnam. He actually killed enemy soldiers. He actually saved the lives of fellow soldiers. He was actually wounded during that event. He was actually awarded for his bravery.

Then the GOP came up with the Kerry is a coward and Dubbya was the real hero back then line. And Republican voters bought it in enough numbers to make a difference. It was a complete fabrication that went well beyond a distortion of the truth. And what it taught them was that they could say anything and their constituents would believe it. Then Trump showed up and put it into practice without any reservations. "Just say it and they'll believe it." He actually fucking says that.

And the thing is, he's right.

Thanks. I can't imagine what they find favorable. The haircut? Maybe around 20% of Repubs favor weird hair cuts.

What's there to be so unfavorable about? It's not like he turned the country into a socialist hellhole like a Fidel Castro or a Hugo Chavez. It was already messed up when he got there. Perhaps he's taking some steps to liberalize North Korea and reconcile with South Korea. If he did more of that, I'd view him favorably.

From what I understand, Kim Jong-un implicitly permits a black market to exist in the country. And whjile Northt Korea is still dirt poor, living standards have increased.

I doubt that those 19% Republicans know that, though.
