2 NYPD Officers Dead In Brooklyn Shooting

Two New York City police officers, Wenjin Liu and Rafael Ramos, were shot dead "execution style" in Brooklyn just before 3 p.m. Saturday, police said, by a killer who had allegedly posted on social media that he wanted revenge for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

"Quite simply, they were assassinated," NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said at a press conference held Saturday evening at the hospital where the grieving families gathered. "Both officers paid the ultimate sacrifice today while protecting the communities they serve."

Liu and Ramos may have never seen the attacker open fire as they were sitting in their patrol car, Bratton said, on special duty because of heightened violence in the area.

The girlfriend is expected to live.
He is a gang member apparently. I expect his gang will come under scrutiny. I'm so sad for the families of those cops and for us all in that this makes all the problems infinitely WORSE not any better. What a piece of shit.

edited - I see that the gunman committed suicide afterward.
I wish those people would just do that step first.

But these complaints aren’t true. Police officers aren’t under siege from hostile elected officials. At no point, for example, has de Blasio attacked the New York City Police Department. Instead, he’s called for improved policing, including better community relations and new training for “de-escalation” techniques. “Fundamental questions are being asked, and rightfully so,” he said at the beginning of the month, after the grand jury decision in the death of Eric Garner. “The way we go about policing has to change.”

Men like this are rare, but still common enough to show a pattern. Their life is a train wreck and they can't figure out why. The world rejects them and they lash out. A trendy political protest is just a convenient excuse to let them imagine some kind of public approval. The rational part of their mind knows the consequences, which will be public disgust and more rejection than ever before. This is why their last victim is themselves. They can't face one more day of their fucked up existence.

That's my read as well. The guy gained material wealth via crime (and has several arrests for it), was estranged from his family, and was basically in a bad spiral. His GF breaking up with him was, in his view, the last straw, and in his demented state, saw all law enforcement as an enemy, that he should kill so he could help out the community before he goes out. I likened him to Eliot Rodgers.

The police union has already said this is the fault of the protestors and the mayor.

Because until these latest protests everybody loved the police.

This will just make things worse. Now, every cop in America has the notion of people wanting to come up and shoot police officers in the front of their mind. That's going to make firing first a more likely option which will, in turn, make everything else worse.

The whole point of the protests is not that were are against cops, we just need more professional well-trained cops because people are dying because of their actions.

I feel a lot for the woman as well. A misogynist shots her for breaking up with him. Granted, we don't have evidence to tell us if the break-up was legitimate. Women have grown accustomed to such an entitled life in the US, so being shot is probably a let down for her.

Especially in New York City!

When Jerard Miller and his wife executed two cops just six months ago, it was just an isolated incident. But when a black man does it, sound the alarm. The smell of fear....

Yes. Context.

how very reductionist of you. the fact that he posted on facebook that he was specifically out to punish cops for the Brown shooting is being conveniently ignored by you.

No, the point of most of the protests is to claim cops are evil racists who murder people for being black, and to claim that this is generally true of most cops.
That is the inherent assumption underlying most claims about these cases and the abuse and misuse of statistical information and total misrepresentation of research on the topic.
Thus, it is beyond reasonable doubt the protests are in fact partly a causal factor here. The shooter was nuts and would have hurt people anyway, but he targeted cops because of the extremist, irrational, objectively false, hateful and conspiratorial rhetoric surrounding most of these protests.

Your characterization of the protests is like saying "Gee, they just wanted to point out the injustice of the law" after a doctor is killed in the heat of fundys screaming that doctors that provide abortions are evil murderers doing the work of Satan.

In that case, if either of the cops had been indicted he wouldn't have done it, right?

So it's the stonewalling of LE that's the issue. Since you want to link the two, let's link them correctly.

And to the point of ignoring issues, you ignore a vast right wing propaganda industry that undoubtedly contributed to Miller's crime. What shall we do about that?

And is that why he shot his ex-girlfriend too?

And you know this because......?
