Meat and Livestock Australia have a tradition of releasing an annual Australia Day ad, to encourage us to eat Lamb on January 26th, but amid increasing calls for the national holiday to be moved to a day that doesn't commemorate the beginning of the end of Aboriginal life and culture, this year's ad has a notable omission. But it's undeniably Aussie as...

There are a lot of well known Australian cultural, sport and entertainment references in there, and a good number of celebrity cameos which might be lost on non-aussies. There's also a nod to last year's controversy, after an outcry from the vegan community about their depiction in last year's ad:

I am not usually a fan of advertising, but if it is to be done, best it be done well - and IMO these ads are pretty good. They might not inspire me to eat lamb (I don't need much of an inspiration to do that), but they do a great job of showing what it means to be an Australian - not least the fact that we don't take ourselves too seriously.

True, true.

And the yanks reckon we are missing out on things... :D

Hey, we're not entirely uncivilized we got federally mandated lamb ads too!

They just haven't captured the imagination of the people the way our "pork, the other white meat", "beef, it's what's for dinner", "the incredible edible egg", and "got, milk?" ferderally mandated ads have. I think those California Raisins are a state mandate, but also very successful.

Still, the lamb board is right in there the mix with the federally mandated almond, christmas tree, cotton, dairy, mushroom, honey, watermelon, peanut, processed rasberry, paper and packaging, popcorn, highbush blueberry, soybean and potato boards.
