I recently got an inside scoop that David Gerrold will be finished with the long awaited 5th book of the Chtorr series in September. How much longer will it take to be printed and in stores?

This depends on what "finished" means. If he has been working with his editor the final version maybe already proofread and type set, and ready for print. It could be available in a few weeks. There will probably be a publicity campaign to drum up business.

Harper Lee's latest book was finished 70 years ago and we've spent the last year hearing about it. It went on sale last Thursday, at $30 a copy. It will be a best seller for a few weeks. If it wasn't written by Harper Lee, it probably wouldn't have made a ripple.

Before the days of digital word processing, once the copy editing (edited for spelling, grammar, etc)was done, the pages would be type set and a couple copies pressed. These would be "proofread", which means checked to see each page is in order, the page numbers are correct, each sentence is continued on the next page, and that sort of thing. Taking a book from final edit to print could take up to a year.
