MONTGOMERY - AL -
A statement made on the floor of the state house last month in Montgomery got a loud reply this afternoon from angry parents.

State representative Alvin Holmes (D) Montgomery, said republican lawmakers would support abortion if their daughters became pregnant by black men. Holmes later said he would offer $100,000 cash to anyone who could show "a whole bunch of whites" have adopted black children in Alabama.

Today at the state house, white parents who adopted mixed race or minority children said it's time for Holmes to 'pay up.'

Gotta luv it.

He made one assertion and one bet, but the two are not somehow mutually exclusive.

There does indeed seem to be a whole bunch of Whites adopting non-White babies in Alabama. That says nothing about a whole bunch of (White) Republicans who would be glad to have abortion available if their daughters became pregnant to Black men.

Of course there a white folk who would think of nothing but aborting a black baby. That's not the point. The point is you had a parade of white parents and their brown babies castigating a shoot from the lip state assemblyman and fox "Santa and Jesus are white dammit" news et. al., cheering these race mixin' families on.

Gotta luv it.

This article misses a larger and more important point.

The reason there are so many white parents with adopted children of color is because our government agencies unfairly declare equally competent African-American couples as being unfit for adoption. The percentage of white couples who are declared qualified to adopt is higher than the percentage of black couples found to be qualified for adoption, and so inevitably you have a lot of white couples raising adopted African-American children, but few if any black couples raising adopted white children.

It might be funny to point at the racist legislator and laugh at him, but there is systemic racism at work here that is affecting a large number of families, and that system will still be in place long after everyone forgets about this news story.

"Shoot from the hip" is too kind. "Shoot straight downward at his feet" is a more apt metaphor.

fox "Santa and Jesus are white dammit" news et. al., cheering these race mixin' families on.
We went over all this before.
1. According to definition of white, historical Jesus would certainly qualify. He would not have looked much like most paintings but would still be classified as white. He certainly would not be classified as "black" no matter the weak "arguments" offered by black supremacists.
2. As a historical character St. Nicholas was Greek (i.e. white). As a fictional character Santa Claus was developed in Northern Europe and was imagine as white.
So both statements are correct despite know-nothing PC crowd ridiculing them and I do not see why there should be a connection between supporting interracial adoption and pointing out those two facts.

Do you have any evidence of that?

Note that this is a very different statement from the one above.

and so inevitably you have a lot of white couples raising adopted African-American children, but few if any black couples raising adopted white children.
One also has to look at "supply" of unwanted children by race. I do not know the numbers but racial disparity in children avalable for adoption would certainly affect the distribution.

It might be funny to point at the racist legislator and laugh at him,

Yes it is. Very much so. ;)

but there is systemic racism at work here that is affecting a large number of families, and that system will still be in place long after everyone forgets about this news story.

Mere assertion unless you have actual evidence for it.

Please note that my above statements about the state of Alabama's stance that interracial adoption was harmful is based on first hand experience as a foster parent in Alabama in the 90's.

Now, as we got into the later 90s, some rules changed, largely because of federal incentives. Previously, they would keep a child in foster care for many years if there was any hope, no matter how insane that the birth family would straighten out. Then federal rules changes to encourage the state financially to give these children permanent homes in shorter time periods, and they started terminating parental rights in 1 - 2 years.

So philosophy's could change based on federal dollars.

Sometimes shit is just funny. Doesn't have to be deep or universal, even when it could be. Just funny.
You aren't seriously suggesting a bunch of infidels shouldn't dissect shit to the nth degree and quibble endlessly are you :D

I have to admit that the Alabama social workers got in my head with the "you can't really help this child, because you don't know what it means to be black" lectures.

Enlighten us as to what's funny here.
It's the part where a politician makes a grandiose claim with great bravado and then is shot down by reality. A politician doesn't need an R next to their name to be capable of making wildly inaccurate, stupid claims.

Ah, the old "watch me accuse everyone who opposes me of being racist while saying things that are hurtful to adoptive mixed race families" schtick.

Wakka-wakka.

Jimmy pretty much hit the nail on the head, but you have a point with the guy holding elective office. Sadly, really far out there batshit ideas have become quite mainstay with our elected officials.

as to the bolded... Because he has a "D" behind his name, no doubt.

Of course, if it is Fox reporting him as a Democrat, there's an even chance he is really a Republican :D

Where do you get that there are a whole bunch? The report avoided giving numbers, but gave some misleading numbers instead. That makes me think the assertion that there aren't a whole bunch is true.

I sure wouldn't want a mixed-race family in Alabama. If I found myself in the situation I would move.
