A Word on White Liberals and Playing the Trump Card

There is a belief among white liberals that all white people, given the facts of a situation, will change opinions and do or think the right thing. I hear it all the time among colleagues, white people at church, friends even in academia who really should know better. It is this belief that leads white democrats to say that they wish The Donald would win the nomination because in the debates he would show himself to be a total idiot. And people won’t vote for an idiot, That would be illogical.

Hello? The man has been showing himself to be a total idiot for YEARS now. And in this campaign, the more idiotic the things he says, the higher in the polls he goes! If Trump can pull off winning the nomination, that will mean even MORE white people will vote for him in the general, not FEWER. It will mean he has legitimized bigotry and eliminated any shame associated with race hatred. It will not only let the Djinn out of the bottle but take off his chains and break the bottle.

People won't vote for someone they think is an idiot.

That isn't true, either among conservatives or liberals. People will vote for the option they think will have the impact closest to what their own interests.
Sometimes that will be an idiot, because despite their idiocy they happen to either hold views or at least will act like they hold views that best serve the voter's own interests. Many economic conservatives who only care about their income likely think Trump is an idiot and far less intelligent than Hillary. Yet, they will vote for him over Hillary in the general because an idiot who shares your goals is better than a genius who opposes them.

Athena's "white" was not in reference to Trump supporters, but to the liberals that oppose him. She singled out "whites" among liberals who irrationally believe that Trump's current supporters will magically move away from him once Hillary exposes his idiocy.
Not exactly. This is one example of a general belief that explanation and exposure to facts leads to people, in this particular case white people, to change their minds on issues.
She'd be all over anyone making a parallel comment about blacks, when its obvious that race is at most a non-causal correlate for the behavior.
Feel free to make a parallel comment and find out.

As for the choice of saying White People ...

White people are the dominant race and the beneficiaries of white supremacy in the US. It is the dominance that leads to certain behaviors that are only open to white people. No, it is not the deficiency of pigmentation that causes anything really, outside of sunburn.
The OP is correct about the naivete of many liberals, but it is tied to a variant of liberal ideology itself, not race. Among older adults, (e.g., 40 and up), this tends to mean mostly whites because few non-whites of prior generations are actually liberal, rather they are more akin to socialists and/or religious conservatives mixed with self-interest in strongly supporting government coerced racial equality in outcomes. IOW, they are "left" but not very liberal in the classical sense of valuing personal liberty rather than merely equality of outcomes.

Watch it, Jolly Penguin. Athena know what she is talking about: We have recent examples to demonstrate our position on this. Things do not have to be good to be true: Note:

I am a white person and I have to admit I am baffled that my fellow white people can be so fucking stupid.

Athena,
The folks at 538 explain it:

I recommend the whole article.

It is in Trump’s interest to allow misinformation — such as his statements about immigrants or Muslim Americans — to flourish. New work by Jennifer Hochschild of Harvard and Katherine Levine Einstein of Boston University found that there are incentives for politicians to keep citizens both misinformed and politically active. For most politicians, it doesn’t make sense to use precious resources to try to move or dissuade people from their incorrect positions — especially if this misinformation supports the political actor’s policy positions or legislative goals (as it does in Trump’s case).

Exactly!

For the basic beliefs held by the Trump voter, their actions are totally logical. And for Trump to win the nomination, those basic beliefs, no matter how out of touch with reality they may be, would have to have been adopted as acceptable by more people. The misinformation will have had to have spread, like typhoid. And that is not what any thinking person should want.

I would think that in a great deal of cases we are all misinformed quite a lot by the media etc. For instance it is not racist to control immigration or protect its borders. Some think it is.

Thre are pockets of racism in all races and communities. Most whites and blacks see no problem with racial equality in politics and the workplace.

Nonsense.

There is a belief among white liberals that humans are generally irrational and have to be carefully taught to think rationally.

When are we building the wall between us and Canada?

If a wall is needed then build one.
Chances are if America builds a high wall and ensures there are no tunnels going underneath, then Canada may be used as via to get in. Remember the Maginot Line.

Perhaps the Wall between the USA and Canada can benefit both as it could also slow the spread of Mexican drug cartels into Canada. The main focus is security for all its entry points. Otherwise the USA could be out of control like Europe and the UK. Germany is the latest example of throwing its gates open to anyone and women paid the price.

The truth is all humans are frequently irrational no matter. So rational thinking is something a person must endeavor to achieve. I think reasoning is the best way to try and change viewpoints rather than teach a person how to think rationally.

Doesn't answer the question.

This arrived in my mailbox today.

This is not a man who is planning to occupy the White House. This is not the man who personifies the rage that is rippling through our culture. When you talk with Donald, you get the distinct impression that he's enjoying this other person, this fellow named Donald Trump, out there tuning up the rubes.
These are the Americans—this dwindling demographic—who are shaping the presidential circus right now. And as we move past the primaries and the Republicans settle on a nominee, what this rage politics will further yield remains to be seen. Is it a passing wave or a rising tide? If the Republicans know what's good for them, the irresponsible talk will have to abate over the summer; the rage will have to recede from center stage. And Donald Trump will be back in Trump Tower, conducting his business as usual.

I'm curious about Nightmare at the Dogpark. That sounds intriguing.

Three Theories Of Donald Trump’s Rise
http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/three-theories-of-donald-trumps-rise/

Before we all decamp for Des Moines next week,2 let’s take one more theoretical look at the Republican race. In fact, we’ll take three of them. As far as I can tell, there are three main theories about the rise of Trump; respectively, they pin the credit (or blame) for Trump on Republican voters, Republican elites and the news media. Each theory interprets his polls differently and comes to different conclusions about how much staying power he might have in the new year.

Theory 1: Trump’s support reflects a Republican populist revolt...
Theory 2: Trump’s support reflects a Republican Party power vacuum...
Theory 3: Trump’s support reflects a media bubble...
