Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Instagram deletes old story videos, so I decided to see if anyone preserves any of AOC's old content. With her kind of fan club, someone might be doing it. I was not very successful, but I found some interesting tidbits. I remember someone asking her how she stays focused and centered, despite all the nastiness that she suffers through. She thinks of what her grandchildren might think, or someone 70 years from now. What will future generations think of her and her efforts?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Yesterday I visited a school assembly w/ teens in Queens.
One of them asked, “What can WE do to combat climate change?”
2 recs:
- Skip disposable razors+switch to safety razors
- Give your tummy a break! Skip meat/dairy for a meal
(easiest is bfast, I do banana & peanut butter) https://t.co/BnAg4x5lGS" / Twitter

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "My other tips:
- Start incorporating thrift, consignment & second-hand clothes in your wardrobe (host a clothing swap w/ friends for a no-spend option)
- Walk, bike, & use public transit more often
- Bring your own bag/coffee mug. It’s okay if you forget, 1x/week is still a win" / Twitter

From February. It got this response from a right-wing publication: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tells teens that eating a banana with peanut butter for breakfast will combat global warming – twitchy.com

The article sneered about the alleged high carbon footprint of bananas, though What's the carbon footprint of … a banana? | Environment | The Guardian claims that it is relatively low. Twitchy again:
Other tips from the celebrity Democratic socialist include the tried-and-true socialist techniques of buying old clothes, sharing clothes with friends and relying on the state for your transportation needs
Right-wingers snicker that millennials cannot afford houses because they spend a lot of their money on coffeeshop lattes and avocado sandwiches, but when one of their targets describes frugality tips, they go into hysterics.

Sneering about "relying on the state for transport needs" is loaded language. It's no different from "relying on the state" for military and police protection. Contrary to a widespread misconception on the Right, soldiers and cops are government employees, not vigilantes. Right-wingers claim to favor self-reliance, and walking is the ultimate in self-reliant transport. Biking comes close, and cars are far behind.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Urges Kids to Save the Planet by Ditching Meat and Dairy | VegNews - "The outspoken congresswoman advised children in Queens to stick to peanut butter and bananas for breakfast, her personal favorite, as a measure to fight climate change." - much more sympathetic.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ Favorite Milks Are Made from Oats and Cashews | VegNews - "The outspoken congresswoman prefers cashew milk over oat—and likes both more than dairy."
Newly elected congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ revealed on social media that her go-to choice of milk is vegan. “I’m very into oat milk right now which, in my opinion, is the best of all the milks after cashew milk,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in an Instagram story. “I know I [sound] very bougie right now but almost any non-dairy milk sounds bougie so here we are.”
I also like fake milks. Like soy milk and cashew milk.

But, they keep voting Democrat. They need to give Republicans a chance so we can kill affirmative action and welfare and fix things.
There were slums long before AA and "welfare". There is little evidence that 1) Republicans can "fix" things", and 2) Republicans care enough to "fix things" in the inner cities.

Lets say that Republicans have the right ideas, and that we should be voting Republican. Then shouldn't the reddest states be the ones in the best shape? With the best economies, lowest unemployment, highest education, least discrimination thanks to Republican policies?

Oooh, hey, good point. Testable, verifiable data.

hey HL, why don't you look up this data and get back to us with your 'proofs'. :D

Some recently deleted tidbits: her walking outdoors apparently somewhere in NYC reminding everybody to stay hydrated and to linking to a map of hydration stations in parts of NYC. Also her waiting at what looks like some outlying subway or commuter-rail or Amtrak station in NYC. I even recall her describing getting chocolate-covered peanut M&M's at a cafe car.

Some of her critics have called her a hypocrite for flying, and that has been the easiest way to get to the southern-border concentration camps. She also posted some video of Instagram of a view from an airplane at night over some urban area. But she still takes the NYC-DC Amtrak train, even if it is no longer safe for her to take the NYC and DC subway trains anymore.

Cute, cozy spot with great margaritas and bangin' burritos.

Bartenders were slow and inattentive, but the waitress (Alexandra, I believe) and her amazing service and the delicious food and drinks (the latter of which the waitress Also had to make for me) more than made up for it.

Pablo Manriquez Hi Celine! Curious: Is "Alexandra" you review here Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez?

The food is excellent, the prices are great, and your waitress, Alexandra, is da BOMB! Super sweet and attentive. Tonight it was super busy, and she was so patient and graceful. This is my new favorite spot!

Editing this to say that without Alexandra, you guys kinda suck. Went today with my friend, and we got there around 4:30ish. There were a couple of servers, but Alexandra had not arrived for her shift yet. The guy that served us got our order wrong, and then left shortly after, telling us to let the bartender know if we wanted anything g else. Alexandra arrived at about 5:30. She quickly took care of us, and was her usual attentive, sweet self. I gotta say, I was there a couple weeks ago, on a really busy night, and she was the only one serving. She accomplished, by herself, what all the other servers tonight put together, couldn't. That girl is a real gem.

Taína Vargas This review wasn’t about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I’ve seen her there, but never actually met her. I was talking about Alexandra, a server who works there, and is mad cool.

So it is AOC or someone else?

That peanut M&M's bit was an older one. There is also some saved video of her assembling furniture in her apartment and discussing various things as she does so. On one occasion, eating popcorn and stating that it's plain popcorn but that she likes to put pepper in it.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Returns To Bartending Roots In NYC to Promote Raise The Wage Act
"It is so real, the amount of exploitation and harassment and labor violations that you will endure for the sake and the structure of tipped work," Ocasio-Cortez said to the crowd of patrons.

She described her own bartending experiences—when she grappled to make ends meet because of the meager pay she received and when she was forced to shrug off unwanted advances from customers because of "economic desperation."

She described her own bartending experiences—when she grappled to make ends meet because of the meager pay she received and when she was forced to shrug off unwanted advances from customers because of "economic desperation."

"You were more likely to stand up for yourself and to reject sexual harassment on the 15th of the month, or maybe the 10th of the month, when you could pick up an extra shift to make up for telling that guy to go buzz off. You will take that dangerous shift that gets out at 3 o'clock in the morning... because your check is unstable, because you're making a different amount every single week."

...
"We need to be paid a stable enough wage to reject sexual harassment … to say, 'I am going to work a shift on my terms' … because we have lives. And we have children to take care of. And we shouldn't have to work 80-hour weeks so that our kids can have a meal at lunch," said Ocasio-Cortez. "All labor has dignity, and the way that we give labor dignity is by paying people the respect and the value that they are worth at minimum."
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "I was nervous that I may have lost my touch - still got it! That muscle memory doesn’t quit 😉
Now let’s pass #RaiseTheWage and get $15 an hour minimum for every worker in America. https://t.co/FR0ARUB7bd" / Twitter

AOC returning to her bartending roots to advocate for raising minimum wage for restaurant employees and other tipped workers - New York Daily News
The congresswoman’s district, which covers parts of the Bronx and Queens, has one of the highest concentrations of nail salons in the country, which are predominantly staffed by immigrant women, according to ROC.

“When we think of tipped workers, we usually think of some restaurant workers,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted last summer to her four million followers. “But tipped workers are far more than that: they are nail salons, car wash techs, and more.

“These are all some of the fastest-growing sectors of the economy, built on labor with precarious pay, damaging work conditions, and notoriously endures abuse and sexual harassment as a result,” she added.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Was Tending Bar and Waiting Tables Less than a Year Ago - VICE
“The funny thing about beginnings is that you rarely know you’re in them,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Instagram last November, captioning a photo that showed her working behind the bar at a New York City restaurant. “My beginning was losing a parent to cancer, working a hard job in the wake of that loss, and complete uncertainty about the future of my family.”

... “The only way you defeat an incumbent is by outworking them,” she said in WNYC’s video called, fittingly, “How to Challenge an Incumbent.” She did.

... She is shown shaking a cocktail in an image still on the bar's website today. (“Loved it! And Alexandra [sic] is the best!” one reviewer wrote on Facebook, two years to the day before her historic victory.)

How Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Pulled Off the Year’s Biggest Political Upset – Mother Jones
After the 2016 election, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was working as a bartender in Union Square when she decided to take a road trip. An activist she knew at Standing Rock, where indigenous activists were leading a demonstration against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, told her the camp could use more women. So the then-27-year-old Ocasio-Cortez and two friends set up a GoFundMe page, loaded up a car full of supplies, and set out for South Dakota.

Still shaken by the election of President Donald Trump, they brought a camera and logged hours of footage talking with people along the way—small business owners in Ohio, housing experts in Flint, Michigan. They made it to the high plains before Christmas and then lived for weeks among Standing Rock’s water protectors in a tent with a wood-burning stove. Ocasio-Cortez was seeking a “first-person idea of what was going on” in America, she told me when we spoke last fall. What she found was that “militarized corporations” were taking over parts of the country, unchecked by political powers.
Then her brother suggested to Brand New Congress that she might be interested in running for office, and BNC contacted her about that. She accepted. Then a lot of detail about why she succeeded in her district, about how the Democratic political machine there had gotten out of touch with many voters.
The candidates’ exchange on ICE at a debate last week illustrated this dynamic quite neatly. Crowley had recently tried (unsuccessfully, it turned out) to get arrested at an immigration protest and had called ICE “fascist.” But Ocasio-Cortez shut him down:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "ICE is operating exactly as designed when it rips screaming children from parents. That’s exactly why we must abolish it.
We MUST have the moral and political courage to #abolishICE.
Weak half-measures do nothing. This is a defining moment of our time - the time to act is now. https://t.co/0viiQ4qdz8" / Twitter

Jeff Stein on Twitter: "This photo is from Nov. 14, 2017. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, was then working as a bartender. Less than a year later, she defeated the likely next Speaker of the House, and will almost certainly be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress https://t.co/JgHjdQWAF6" / Twitter
She was.

That Mother Jones article concluded:
What happened in the 14th District isn’t a formula that will work everywhere. Most places aren’t as full of voters as disconnected from their party leadership as New York City is, and few longtime incumbents are as ill-prepared for a brawl as Crowley was; he had been gifted the seat by his predecessor without ever having to fight for it. Ocasio-Cortez turned out to be really good at politics; lots of long-shot candidates aren’t. And it probably helps that Republicans don’t have a prayer of winning a congressional election in Jackson Heights. But many Democrats, including Crowley, may have written off Ocasio-Cortez because of her youth and lack of institutional support. Instead, she won because of that. And after Tuesday, a lot more young progressives just might think they can, too.
Joe Crowley was good at sounding progressive without being willing to do much about it, as AOC had been, going to Standing Rock, and going to a border camp in Texas.

The Gospel of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Bar patrons at Flats Fix were among the earliest allies of Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign for Congress.

“The people who made our graphics and our fliers and stuff were regulars at the bar where I was bartending,” she said in a post-primary interview with popular New York City radio host Laura Styles of Hot 97.
Ex co-worker no fan of Democrat darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Most of the people who had worked at Flats Fix had nice things to say about "Sandy", as she was known for the four years that she had worked there. But one waitress doesn't.
At the end of the night, when it came time to split the $560 in tips she had gotten at the bar, Ocasio-Cortez gave the waitress only $50. After the waitress complained to her manager, her take was doubled to $100, a source said.

“It says so much about her character,” said my source. “From that point on, I wouldn’t talk to her. I couldn’t look at her.”

Asked about this story, Milite said it was untrue.

“I know it’s not accurate because I was the manager on duty that day… we do keep records.” He dismissed the claim as coming from a person “with an axe to grind.”

As for Ocasio-Cortez, “she’s too big of a person to let this interrupt her life,” said Milite. “I can vouch for her integrity and her work ethic.”

Some nicer news.

Police Officer Fired After Suggesting AOC Should Be Shot on Facebook

Joe Crowley was good at sounding progressive without being willing to do much about it, as AOC had been, going to Standing Rock, and going to a border camp in Texas.

"Standing Rock" was an idiotic "protest" (we had a few threads about it) and AOC going there shows just how stupid she is.

A recent Instagram.

AOC and her team recently visited the National Archives in DC. The archives contained lots of original versions of important documents, and the documents' caretakers did not allow them to be photographed, so as to preserve them (no flash, presumably). Documents like the Bill of Rights and the Civil Rights Act and a women's-rights petition from 1838. That latter one featured people willing to address "mixed crowds" - both sexes together.

AOC found all the opposition encouraging, because it had successfully been overcome. Some *women* opposed women having the right to vote, with arguments that it represented "official endorsement of nagging as a national policy" and "it would get every radical woman to believe she could get any law she wanted." I'm sure that she got a chuckle out of that.

AOC Is Your New Best Friend

...
She also makes sure to strike a familiar tone. You can see this in her Instagram captions. Roughly 60% (148 of 247 posts) of her Instagram posts since 2017 contained emojis, for instance.

She also brings in her audience through humor. In the ninth most popular on Instagram, she writes: “Behind every strong woman... are more strong women 😉 #ittakesavillage.” She has fun while dismissing her critics, creating a space for people to rejoice in defiance. “If Republicans thought women dancing in college is scandalous wait till they find out women dance in Congress, too! 😉,” she wrote in her most popular Instagram post. “I announced that no one who works for me full-time will make less than $52k and Fox News called it communism 🤣,” she wrote in another.

She’s vulnerable, too, and allows for people to feel close to her in that way. In the second-most-liked Instagram post on her feed, she admits, “All this attention gives me a lot of anxiety.”
On the other side,
Headlines of some of the most popular conservative videos on YouTube use vocabulary that is clearly combative. Ocasio-Cortez is associated with being aggressive: She “lashes out,” “bashes,” or “denies.” This villain-versus-hero depiction continues in other video headlines that claim she’s being “grilled,” “slammed,” or “hit” or gets “SHREDDED” (all caps) by conservatives.

... Snark and humor play a particularly important part in this, as demonstrated in one video called “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Economic Genius” and another video: “Tomi Lahren: I love seeing Ocasio-Cortez on TV.” In both videos, hosts talk about how unintelligent Ocasio-Cortez comes off.

... The prevailing narrative is that AOC is a far-left socialist or communist. There are repeated attacks on her intelligence and looks. There are frequent stabs at her being a hypocrite. And all of these posts are peppered with expletives — “donkey face Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez” being a milder one.

... Similarly, negative Instagram posts that feature her are often memes that capture her grimacing. Of the top 3,000 Instagram posts tagged #AOC, many included screenshots of her midsentence, her mouth wide open and looking as if she is angry, clueless, or mean. It’s the ultimate way to visually make her unlikable.

... Yet others show her eyes on the faces of historical socialist and communist figures or next to scary creatures — another way to take away her humanity.

All of this screams “She’s not one of us!” in what can seem like the crudest of ways. She’s an other and doesn’t belong in our in-group. It’s exemplary of how hyperpartisan right and leftist factions treat political opponents.

Why Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Instagram Is So Good from Nov 21, 2018 - "She embodies this surrealist thing of, like, “WHAT IF…you were elected to Congress? What would happen next? What would you do?”" A sort of Señora Herrera Goes to Washington

Has a picture of the Congress building with "Welcome to Hogwarts" and a picture of her underneath a portrait of Shirley Chisholm and "We stand on the shoulders of giants."

From late November 2018:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "I never had a problem showin' y'all the real me/
Hair when it's messed up, crib when it's filthy/
Way-before-the-deal me, work-to-pay-the-bills me/ 'Fore I fixed my teeth, man, those comments used to kill me/
But never did I change, never been ashamed/" / Twitter

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Never did I switch, story stayed the same/
I did this on my own, I made this a lane
Mood https://t.co/KpZzlzOue6" / Twitter

Then some of her pictures of her cooking for herself and Thomas Jefferson's copy of Plato's Republic
And maybe it’s that dissonance — the one between watching an incoming member of Congress take live requests and talk politics while she makes something in an Instant Pot, and knowing that this likely cannot last, and everyone is playing with combustible materials — that produces the impulse to say: Don’t go! Can’t it be fun for a while longer?

You guys are in a pickle.

It should prove very interesting whether any of these loony tunes are re-elected next time. I've seen somewhere where AOC has just 22% support in her home state. The other three would probably have roughly around the same support. Only thing standing in the way is the Colonel Sanders syndrome, where chickens keep voting to get their heads chopped off!

Why would anyone else want to defend your comment? It was an utterly stupid false quote. Defend your own damn comments, if you can. For example, can you provide actual quotes of any of the four congresswomen saying "America is racist", or "America is evil", or "America is disgusting"? If you can't, your comment was less than worthless.

Let's see. Ilhan Omar said that when she came here as a kid, this was not the America her father promised her because it's a racist country. Beto O'Rourke said this country was founded on white supremacy. Libs constantly say this country is racist. AOC said Trump is a racist.

Yet, they want immigrants to come here. Why? So they can get disrespected by racists? So they can get killed by a fascist regime? Maybe...just maybe....they don't really believe America is a terrible place deep down inside. They just have to play the racist/bigot/fascist card to fear monger.
