All 4 WV supreme court justices impeached

I've long said that impeaching judges that won't vote your way is going to be one of the tools of subverting the system.

Well, avoiding a special election so that you can appoint who you like would certainly subvert representative government. Same goes for the stunt the Republicans pulled stealing a supreme court pick from Obama and hiding info about Kavanaugh.

According to the article, they are being impeached for financial shenanigans.
NBC News said:
West Virginia lawmakers completed the extraordinary move of impeaching all four state Supreme Court justices Monday night for spending issues, including a suspended justice facing a 23-count federal indictment.

Doesn't mean it's really why they are being impeached. The timing alone says it's about appointing rather than electing.

The line delineating wasteful spending and spending is blurry. I think the article indicated that two of the indicted judges have had the charges dropped against them. This presumably happened because the $111,000 and $131,000 office renovations that inspired their impeachments were evaluated to be acceptable after further consideration.

The judges who didn't have the charges dropped against them likely did excessively waste tax dollars for personal gain, which is an issue. But again, if we were to compare the excesses of these judges with the expenses that Trump levels on the taxpayers backs every time he wants to play a round of golf... would these judges still look excessively wasteful in comparison?

I think the charges are legitimate, but the law itself makes me queezy because it is far from clear cut what is and what isn't wasteful spending.

As for legislators deliberately dragging their feet to avoid a special election and skip straight to appointments.... that's a subversion of democracy. I think it is likely that is EXACTLY what they are trying to do, but it's politics as usual, so Meh? What can we do about it?
