For the first time in generations, farmers in central Mexico have stopped planting marijuana.

Due to ample supplies up north, courtesy of medical and recreational cannabis legalization, cartel farmers can’t make any money off pot anymore, they told the Washington Post this week. The price for a pound of Mexican marijuana has plummeted 75 percent from $100 per kilogram to less than $25.

Now if we just decriminalize or legalize the rest of the drugs as well maybe we can stop all this needless violence.

I wouldn't say its needless violence. Without the drug war it will be harder for the government to justify its growing militarized police state. Not to mention all the jobs and profits for the private prison industry. The violence is quite necessary for those who benefit from it.

Which cartels are going out of business exactly? From the WP article it sounds like marijuana is being replaced by opium poppies, and heroin smuggling from Mexico to USA is at an all-time high (no pun intended).

Yeah, they didn't say they were going out of business, they just said they couldn't make any profit on pot anymore. So like all businesses, they will stop supplying it and go with something else more lucrative.

Like Limes?

But thank god they are going to opium. With the DEA and FDA fucking with America's pain medication, we are going to be needing all the illegal pain meds we can get :)

Mining, logging and extortion seem to be popular:
