The man who killed three women after a stand-off at a veterans' home in Napa Valley, California was a former patient, authorities say.

The three victims were all employees at the centre in Yountville.

The residential centre provides mental health services for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Around here (I live not far from Yountville) it is the usual mixture of shock and dull acceptance. People are outraged, but tired of being outraged and pessimistic after years of seeing nothing come of it. Gun skeptics feel justified in their inconsistent positions, gun advocates think it was a staged event to take away their guns.

Personally, I think this particular incident would have been very difficult to prevent. It looks to me like the violence of war being carried home, a violation than should always be expected in a state of transgenerational war. I doubt they will revoke the decorations awarded to the gunman for committing similar acts in the domain of war. But keeping "there" and "here" separate will ever be neat act of division unpenetrated by catastrophe.
