Everyone thought the movie wouldn't be that good because of the problems the project had during development (director quit over creative differences), but honestly the resulting movie kicked all kinds of ass.

These Marvel movies tend to follow the tropes and structures of a particular genre (for example, Captain America 2 was a political thriller in superhero wrappings), and this one follows the structure of a heist movie and even has fun with some of the tropes. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously and uses lots of humor (somewhat reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy in that regard).

The movie is a "passing the mantle" comic book story, but the emotional hook is that it's really about two flawed fathers trying to repair their relationships with their daughters.

There's a brief tie-in with the events of Avengers 2, and this involves the old trope that whenever superheroes meet for the first time, there has to be a fight. In keeping with the tone of this movie, the fight is both adorable and funny.

There is a mid-credits scene and an end-credits scene.

The mid-credits scene wraps up a plot point from the Ant-Man movie and will make you want to cheer; Hope's line echoes the sentiment of the audience. The end-credits scene makes a nice connection between Captain America 2 and Captain America 3.

Oh, I forgot to mention the villain.

Unfortunately, villains are a weakness of most Marvel movies. Sure, sometimes they're lucky enough to produce a Loki or a Winter Soldier, but most of the time their villains seem like an afterthought. The villain of this movie has an understandable and relatable motive. You actually feel bad for him as he descends further and further into his own madness.

I was just thinking the same thing about Marvel having a serious lack of villain characterization, and here is a suggestion to the marvel execs readings this forum to remedy the situation:

Make a sitcom out of "Superior Foes of Spider-Man".

You're welcome!

That might work. There were a LOT of Spiderman foes that made me think all the adults had been at a convention when the issue was written.
Or someone had brought special brownies in to work....

I agree with your assessment. I thought it was a great movie, even though I have never been much of an Ant-Man comic fan. It had just the right blend of comedy and action for me. I'm not sure where to rank it in the Marvel Cinematic Universe pantheon, not quite as good as Guardians of the Galaxy, but then I am a big fan of the comics there. Possibly better than Winter Soldier, but it is different thematically, as you note. Definitely better than Iron Man 3, and it beats out Iron Man 2 as well. It is probably on par with the two Avengers movies, though Age of Ultron might win out if you value action over comedy in a super-hero movie.

Aw, man, I didn't stick around to see if there was an end credits sequence. I should have known there would be one, it seems to always be the case with Marvel films. I guess I will have to go looking for it on the intarwebz.

Guess I'm the odd man out. I wanted to like it more than I did, but it felt undercooked for me. I would like to see Ant Man 2 however, now the character is set up.

I liked it a lot. I had low expectations for this movie and was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was. The villian was rather meh again and was just kind of there to give the heroes something to do. I really liked the fight with the Falcon and the Spanish guy was hilarious.

Well worth watching, but not one to be overly excited about.

Sadly, compared to most Marvel villains, this one was pretty well done. His motives actually made sense (resented his mentor for holding back on his greatest discovery, the tech he was messing with slowly drove him mad), and I actually felt sorry for him. He was no Loki nor Winter Soldier, but miles better than most villains in Marvel movies.

I'm still skeptical that I will cheer for a superhero named Ant-Man.

I said the same thing about Guardians of the Galaxy. I neither liked nor cared about that comic book, but Marvel made me love the movie, so I went and saw Ant-Man despite having the same reservations. I didn't like the comic book character, but gave the movie a try anyway.

Finally watched ANT MAN.

Good enough to pay to see. (I didn't but I now I know I could have and not wanted my money back)

Last of phase two

Now for AVENGERS 2.5 (AKA Captain America Civil War)
