Anyone see Suicide Squad yet?

Probably going to see it, even though my hopes aren't very high given the reviews.

From most of what I read, despite the flaws, Harley and Amanda Waller are well-done, and those are the characters I'm most interested in anyway.

Metacritic has Suicide Squad listed under "Editor's Picks", but with a lowly score of 41.

Good call there, Ed.

I'm just tired of all the Marvel Super Hero stuff.

Suicide Squad is definitely different from anything in the Marvel universe, even if the original concept is just a rip-off of Dirty Dozen. It's been going on long enough that it's become its own thing, and being in a comic book universe makes it different enough that you barely recognize what is being copied.

I will say this: Amanda Waller is more interesting than the Punisher. The story function of Punisher is to cross moral lines that force the other heroes to ask themselves difficult questions about the whole vigilante thing that they are doing. Waller blurs the lines more because technically what she is doing is legal, or at least government-sanctioned enough that it is more legal than what the superheroes are doing. Punisher can be easily dismissed as a mass murderer who happens to prefer victims who are criminals, but it's harder to dismiss what Waller is doing, and every time the superheroes turn a supervillain over to the police, they may be complicit in what Waller is doing to them.

Waller may actually be more vicious and ruthless than any of the supervillains she coerces.

The fact that she is African-American and effectively enslaving others (even if it's only bad people) makes the whole thing that much more uncomfortable.

And Cracked suggested making the Suicide Squad movie back in 2014:

Saw it.

Leto's Joker isn't all that bad.

Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller were great.

The movie sucked big sweaty donkey balls. I didn't care about the characters, nor did I care about what was happening. Huge disappointment. I'm a Marvel fan, but I'm really hoping that DC will step up their game, if only to raise the bar. Competition is good for the consumer and all that.

Harley Quinn was amazing - Robbie owned that character. Will Smith did a good job of playing Will Smith - if you've seen another Will Smith movie, imagine that character holding a gun. Jai Courtney was frigging hilarious and Amanda Waller was amazing.

The movie itself was kind of dumb. There were fun action scenes but the story was non-existent and there wasn't much in the way of character development. Worth seeing for a fun ride, but not altogether memorable.

I thought it was a decent movie, but not great. I would rank it better that Batman V Superman by just a bit. They did a really good job depicting most of the characters. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn hit it out of the park, Jai Courtney was excellent as boomerang, and Viola Davis was perfect for Amanda Waller. Jared Leto was good as the Joker, but nothing amazing. Joker doesn't get much screen time in this one, but Leto does a good job with what he has to work with. I was torn on Will Smith as Deadshot. The character does not have much personality in the comics, and I thought at the beginning of the movie Will Smith was doing pretty good in the role, and not just playing Will Smith. By the end of the film, though, Deadshot was turned into Will Smith.

The plot is fairly standard comic book fare, which is to say full of holes, and rather contrived. Despite Morgot Robbie playing an excellent Harley, her humor consistently fell flat. It was definitely a case of a great performance hampered by mediocre dialogue. Speaking of dialogue, there is way too much exposition from the characters, and in some cases they decided to recap the plot that you have been watching unfold for the last 30 minutes in dialogue.

All in all, it's probably worth a watch, with some dumb fun, and good action, although one action scene is shot very dark, and with too many close ups to really tell what is going on. Don't expect to laugh out loud at the humor, but it isn't exactly cringe worthy either. It's also worth noting that the movie can be consumed in isolation, you don't need to watch any previous DC movies to understand what is going on, everything is wrapped up in the end (for the most part), and it isn't obviously just setting up for a second film.

All this praise for Margot Robbie's Harley Quin... but is it true that they don't even use the accent from the cartoon where Harley Quin originated? That would totally ruin the character for me and I couldn't see it as Harley Quin. That accent is as essential to Harley Quin as the Bat on the chest and ears on the mask is to Batman.

I'm not sure if it is the same accent as the cartoon, as I haven't seen the cartoon, but it is identifiable as a New York/New Jersey accent.

Oh so maybe they did use it then. Maybe I will watch this film then sometime :) Otherwise I'd feel compelled to avoid it.

Because if there's one thing that every character needs, it's having the actor try and fake an accent that's not natural for them. That never ruins everything about a movie.

So get an actor that can pull it off. Harley Quin without her distinctive accent would be like Batman without any gruffness or a Joker that never laughs.

or a batman that straight up just murders people using guns, or a joker that's a hot topic version of kanye west cosplaying a juggalo, or a superman who's a brooding emo.

oh wait...

But Robbie is an actor who pulled it off. I don't think that even the most negative reviews of the movie had much of a problem with her character. I can't recall what her accent was like because since you mentioned it, every time I think of what she said, I hear the voice of the cartoon Quinn in my head, but there wasn't anything about Robbie's voice which was too disconcordent from that so as to make me notice it.

Good point. The current crop of DC films are garbage, and Batman vs Superman was the worst movie I have seen in years. Here's hoping this one is an exception.

Marvel has done it so much better.

Haven't seen the film yet, so I hope she did indeed pull off the voice if I do go see it sometime.

She had the accent, it just wasn't as pronounced as the cartoon.

My 14 year old pointed out that the accent came and went throughout the movie. She thought it was intentional as moments of Dr. Quinn/Crazy Harley.
