Apparently you are now "racist" if you prosecute black shoplifters and assaulters

Holy thread necromancy batman

Unreal.
The thread was revived because there was new information. Notwithstanding that despite this, the angry conservative crowd seems to still be unaware, somehow, that the case was resolved in favor of their chosen stance, and still wish to play the role of an aggreived majority race unfairly harassed by the federal government, even after it unequivocally took the side of the business owners.

Yes. Rationally, "race realists" have nothing at all to complain about here. The government clearly and distinctly took the side of the white business owners involved in the controversy, and awarded them more than enough in damages to save their bakery twice over if a temporary drop in patronage over a now five-years resolved political debate were truly the only reason for their financial difficulties.

The college refuses pay.

This is awesome.

Could you imagine the post-judgment interest on the $33M verdict by now? Aw, man. Gonna get the sheriff to seize parts of college and put ‘em up for sale. Oberlin has the dumbest lawyers.
Interest rates have been extremely low over the past couple of years, so the post-judgment interest would not be much compared to the principal.
Wait... so we have tort reform to prevent people wronged by corporations from getting compensation, but a bakery was awarded, what 5 years or so of income?

Which is illegal for them to do, and will be treated as such. Or do we need to once again necromance the thread next year or whenever they start racking up fines and penalties, and face a difficult re-accreditation battle if they continue to operate in public defiance of court order?

What on earth are you talking about? I'm not sure what a 'race realist' is or who you including in that category, but the owners still live in a world where false accusations by race-obsessed "anti racists" can fuck them over.

You might as well say the victims of crime have nothing at all to complain about because there is a victim compensation fund, or a quadriplegic from a workplace accident has nothing at all to complain about because they got worker's compensation.

So, it sounds like the person working for the place (son/grandson) of owner was/is a racist.

The incident, however, didn't seem to be racist.

No shock there, but it's irrelevant to the case.

Also, I suspect plenty of folks in our forum's conversation would disagree that "not my fault most black ppl around my area suck" is necessarily a racist comment. What's the context? How can you tell what the real man truly feels in his heart of hearts? Maybe he's "just angry" and "had a bad day", and anyways, look at these statistics on black crime as thought they're somehow relevant!

By Oberlin though? I know you are very close to the intimate details of this case, living thousands of miles from Cuyahoga County, but Oberlin wasn't the source of the grievance, it was the students. But the students don't have deep pockets like Oberlin does.

Until the business has received the damages the issue is not closed. The business has every right to feel aggrieved, complain and publicize the injustice.

I'm sure they do, and I would too in their position (unless I had enough common sense to realize that expressing that opinion publically is unlikely to help business in a college town). But that is not the same thing as the incident being proof of government or social discrimination against whites. Quite the opposite.

It does seem to bother you (and possibly others) the noisy plebs won't just up about it.

That's not something I said or implied.

Pulling epistemological rank is often a good sign you actually have no decent argument.

Oberlin's dean of students Raimondo organised and encouraged the protests and smear campaign. Do you believe that no organisation has responsibility for their staff's actions under their employ?

It seems to me it is critical race theorists who would have questions about whether it is 'racist' or not.

For example, if uttered by a black person, the statement would not be regarded as racist, in fact would be ruled out from the possibility of being racist.

But, since it was uttered by a white person, and every single interaction of white people with anyone in the universe is always informed by racism, of course it was racist. You might as well simply start with 'everything is racist' and point out the occasional exception.

Who are you talking about? Is it posters here you're calling "the angry conservative crowd"? Because I don't see anybody in the thread complaining about the federal government since the decision. The recent criticism here has been of Oberlin staff. Contrariwise, if by "the angry conservative crowd" you're referring to non-leftist Americans in general, well, suggesting they ought to have shut up about their grievances with the federal government since the federal government unequivocally took the side of the business owners in this specific incident is on a level with suggesting black people ought to shut up about their grievances since America voted for a black man for President.

A rather detailed history of this case that is worth reading:

Gibson's Bakery v. Oberlin College

Some interesting and disturbing highlights:

A former administrator said that Oberlin's recent drop in enrollment caused the school to be wary of disagreeing with its students. "A freshman from an East Coast big city might come to Oberlin and find there is little for a social justice warrior to do in a small town like this, so they get frustrated and make issues like this shoplifting thing bigger than it should be, and the school follows along."[3]

Retired Oberlin professor Roger Copeland was also critical of the protests, writing a year after the protests began, "It’s embarrassing when one has to ask Oberlin students the same question one asks climate-change deniers: At what point do you accept the empirical evidence, even if that means having to embrace an “inconvenient” truth? ... The time has come for the Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo, on behalf of the College, to apologize to the Gibson family...."[6] Raimondo reacted to Copeland's statement in a private text message, "Fuck him. I'd say unleash the students if I wasn't convinced this needs to be put behind us."[6] Conor Friedersdorf, a writer for The Atlantic, argued that college administrators at Oberlin "calculatingly wield some control over whether students activists are aggressive or restrained".[6]

An email from Vice President of Communications Ben Jones read, "All these idiots complaining about the college hurting a 'small local business' are conveniently leaving out their massive (relative to the town) conglomerate and price gouging on rents and parking and the predatory behavior toward most other local business. Fuck 'em."[15]

Sounds like a charming little school. What parent wouldn't want to spend $80,000/yr to send their kid there? And I thought Amway was a big scam...

Oberlin's dean of students, Meredith Raimondo, as well as other college officials joined the protestors, bringing them pizza, authorizing the purchase of winter gloves for students protesting in cold weather, and helping pass out flyers urging passersby to boycott Gibson's.[4] Jason Hawk, a reporter and editor with the Oberlin News-Tribune testified that Raimondo blocked him repeatedly from photographing the protest, telling him that he did not have a right to photograph the student protestors and handed him a flyer that read "This is a RACIST establishment with a LONG ACCOUNT of RACIAL PROFILING and DISCRIMINATION."[3][16]

Local police records showed no previous accusations of racial profiling by Gibson's Bakery.[4] Of the forty adults arrested for shoplifting from the bakery in a five-year period, only six were black.[17] As a part of the three students' guilty plea in August 2017, each read a statement saying, "I believe the employees of Gibson’s actions were not racially motivated. They were merely trying to prevent an underage sale." Reporters obtained an email written by Emily Crawford, an employee for the school's communications department, telling her bosses that she found the protests "very disturbing," saying, "I have talked to 15 townie friends who are [persons of color] and they're disgusted and embarrassed by the protest. In their view, the kid was breaking the law, period... To them this is not a race issue at all."[6] During the trial, Eddie Holoway, a black man who worked his way through technical college while working at Gibson’s Bakery, testified that the racist allegations against his former employer were untrue. "In my life, I have been a marginalized person, so I know what it feels like to be called something that you know you’re not. I could feel his pain. I knew where he was coming from."[6] Clarence 'Trey' James, a black man employed at Gibson's since 2013, testified that he had observed no racist treatment of customers or employees. "Never, not even a hint. Zero reason to believe, zero evidence of that."[18] Trey also told the student-run Oberlin Review, "When you steal from the store, it doesn't matter what color you are. You can be purple, blue, green; if you steal, you get caught, you get arrested."[14]

So, Raimondo, a white woman, claimed the bakery was racist, but black people who worked at the bakery and "townie"'s didn't think it was. Nice. Meredith Raimondo is a flat out nasty, evil woman for leading the charge in this destructive mess. How she got a job after this is astounding. And yet people here seem to be more concerned that she's been labeled a crazy cat lady. SMH.

Oberlin is refusing to pay the judgment against them:

Ohio's Oberlin College racked up over $4 million in interest charges for delaying payment to a local bakery after falsely claiming the owners of the bakery were racist.
The owners of Gibson's Bakery were seeking damages after they claimed the allegations harmed their business when students boycotted the store and the college canceled its relationship with the bakery, Fox News reported.

The college was ordered to pay $31.6 million to the bakery in 2019 after a jury found the school and a former dean liable for libel for the racism allegations. The owners of the bakery had tackled a black college student who was arrested after shoplifting bottles of wine. Two other black students were also involved in the altercation. However, the school ignored the order to pay the bakery, accruing $4,300 daily in interest, prompting the extra $4 million in fees.
A jury found that Oberlin College and its former Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo were involved in libel and awarded the bakery $44 million. However, Lorain County Judge John Miraldi later lowered the damages to $25 million. Oberlin was also ordered to reimburse the bakery for its legal fees, which cost an additional $6.5 million.
The jury also found that the college intentionally inflicted emotional distress on owner David Gibson and his son.
The verdict against Raimondo comes after she passed out fliers of the allegations to students in 2017, which claimed the bakery was a "RACIST establishment with a LONG ACCOUNT of RACIAL PROFILING and DISCRIMINATION," according to court documents.

The college asked the Ohio Supreme Court to halt the payment — however, the bakery also filed documents to the state Supreme Court opposing the order request. No date has been announced for the Supreme Court to hear the case.

For a judgment not to be paid while an appeal is pending is not unusual. Making an issue of it is a Faux Noise thing.

Using endless appeals to avoid paying what they owe is an asshole move by Oberlin. Meanwhile, their victims are waiting for what is owed them for years.
