Bernardo and Hamolka (Serial Killers & Rapists)

The purpose of the system is to physically restrain those who would re-offend, until such time as they change their minds; To deter others from offending; And to deter victims of crime from embarking on vendettas.

Any imprisonment term beyond what is needed to meet those objectives is a waste of resources.

That makes no sense. It's saying that if you murder your parents to get the inheritance money, you shouldn't be jailed for it because you're not going to re-offend because there's nobody else you're going to be inheriting money from.

Rehabilitation is one goal of the prison system, but the punishment aspect is arguably a more important one. It exists to have criminals face the consequences of their actions.

Both are important. It isn't like Babylon 5 where people can get their minds wiped and start anew.

Society needs the punishment sometimes as much as the criminal. I think some in society like the idea of punishment a bit much, 'just stick a needle in them' fuckwads that think they'd have the courage to do it, but they are meek down deep.

Hamolka was a travesty of justice. She also should have spent a lifetime behind bars but absent the evidence on the video tape, she was able to successfully sell herself as a victim and got off with a reduced sentence. It annoys me that Hell isn't real because she's someone who clearly deserves an eternity of pain and suffering.

Another point about Hamolka is that she has since had her own children. I wonder if they are in danger from those who learn about who their mother is and are retribution minded. And as recently as last year, she was volunteering at their school, with other children. That's pretty messed up.
I would wonder more if her children are in danger from her or other children at the school.

Probably not so much from the other kids:

Bully: Give me your lunch money!
Kid: My mom raped and murdered a bunch of people.
Bully: Right ... here's my lunch money. Please have some extra dessert on me. <runs away>

You missed deterrence. That's the reason why parent murderers need to go to jail.

Punishment alone is pointless and barbaric.

It isn't other children that I would see them as targets of.
Why not - her crimes were against teenagers. It is more likely she would revert to her previous behavior than some random person attacking her children.
