This is what religious frenzy can make you do --

A 15-year-old boy near Lahore cut off his own hand believing he had committed blasphemy, only to be celebrated by his parents and neighbours for the act, police told AFP Friday.Local police chief Nausher Ahmed described how an imam told a gathering at a village mosque that those who love the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) always say their prayers, then asked who among the crowd had stopped praying.
The boy raised his hand by mistake after apparently mishearing the question.
The crowd swiftly accused him of blasphemy so he went to his house and cut off the hand he had raised, put it on a plate, and presented it to the cleric, the police chief said.
The incident took place at a village in Hujra Shah Muqeem town, some 125 kilometres (77 miles) south of Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, about four days ago, according to the policeman.
Ahmed said that he has seen a video in which the boy is greeted by villagers in the street as his parents proclaim their pride.
No complaint has been made, he said, so no police report has been filed and there will be no investigation.

Either the boy was truly religious or he did it before he got murdered by the faithful mob.
Seeing the parents celebrate his devotion could mean either.

This is so depressing. :sadyes:

It's like something out of the Dark Ages. Superstition, Intolerance and Ignorance.

One's got to wonder if the 'dark ages' are what we're really like and only under exceptional circumstances do some of us think with rational thought.

Hell, even in Canada, one of the most forward nations in the world, most people seem to only know just enough that they shouldn't break the law or be homophobic.

A strange World indeed.

Really? He cut his own hand because he raised it to a trick question?
Wow. Just wow.

Actually, it makes sense
These religions were born when Kings ruled with an iron fist - religions made God in his image. Kings were the Masters of their land and their subjects were their slaves/servants. Brought before the King, subjects were expected to get down on their knees, shaking with fear, swear undying loyalty(belief), and beg for his mercy and protection. Pleased, the king will either let the stay(heaven) or kick them out or have them killed(hell)
What we are witnessing is a continuation of such ideas - the slave disobeyed master, hence the slave must be punished
Above all, master must be pleased
In a church recently two teenage kids were assaulted and beaten for being gay. Some of those members who beat them were their OWN family members. One kid died from his beatings
In Pakistan a woman was sentenced to death by stoning. One of the stone throwers was her OWN son
You see the slave mentality here
If you think this was just some crazy people...
At least 2 TV episodes where a child draws a cartoon showing her father who refuses to attend church, burning in hell. This was her own father, a person who loves her, protects her, would give his life for her - but he refuses to kneel to the master and so must be punished
The same idea where these religions condemn those not of the religion to Hell - you do not kneel to our master, you will be punished
That is why as a Hindu, i feel disturbed when Hindus use the word Lord when referring to God - Lord & Master - that's a slave word - Hinduism is not a Master/Slave religion and we should not be using that word, nor should we be kneeling when we go to the Temple - kneeling is also a slave behavior

Many Christians engaged in bizarre self-flagellation rituals because they believed their own suffering would cure the plague. The plague was a curse from god, and only their own suffering could convince god to stop punishing them.

I think this is a similar phenomenon.

When you encourage people to accept bad arguments for truth claims, then this can have a wide variety of unpredictable effects on the quality of their decisions.

Strange, or exactly as it should be?

Isn't there room for improvement?

Of course, my meaning isn't that the world won't change or improve. When you call it strange, though, that suggests that there's some alternative that should have been possible. Clearly that's not the case, what we've got is what we've got.

Maybe so. But to me it still appears to be an odd/strange world because I can imagine better choices being made. Of course the people of the time did not make these decisions because their condition did not allow it...rejecting Hitler from the very outset, not supporting Bush and co's invasion of Irag because of 'weapons of mass destruction, etc.
