Religion truly is fucked up....I seem to remember some specious claims about religion being all about love....

A North Carolina Christian school teacher’s arrest on 13 charge of molesting children has opened the floodgates on stories of abuse from inside the church, WRAL reports.

Jonathan Young, 34, of Benson, N.C. was a Sunday school tecacher at Firstborn Baptist Church in Benson. N.C. He was charged with rape of a child and other crimes. In the wake of that investigation, former church members are stepping forward with harrowing stories about Firstborn Baptist, which they describe as a cult.

One former member, Beka Foust, was brought into the church by her family at age five.

“They would put me in the closet with a light out and I would just sit there all day,” Foust told WRAL. “I was allowed to eat once.”

Foust’s sister Cherith Roberson, 32, said she had a friend who was beaten so loudly that the entire church could hear it.

“She was beaten and everybody in the school could hear it happening.,” she said of her friend. “There was a lot of physical and emotional abuse that went way beyond spanking.”

Let's se how many Logical Fallacies the religiturds come up with.....I'll guess at least "No True Scotsman" comes up....

Spare the rod and spoil the child, so sayeth the mercifuil god of love. Over the years there have been ugly reports of abuse. Many reports from wo,em who escaped from the Morman polygamists. Chilren passed around with old men for marriage.

Christian Scientists who do not allow medical care for children.

It's not a logical fallacy to note that some people pretend to be something they are not.
Richard Dawkins wasn't guilty of a logical fallacy when he started the "Come Out" campaign urging closet atheists to stop faking belief.
It's no logical fallacy for Dan Dennet to point out that there are hundreds/thousands of atheists masquerading as clergy.

...and I never did believe those artificially low atheists in prison stats.

I went to a catholic school in 1960s Scotland.....it was, despite the false talk of love, a place where children from age 5 were routinely beaten with leather straps. Religion is a hideous perversion.

RCC schools 50s/60s. Grammar school was not that bad. Standing in the corner or a whack with a ruler. High school was more like a prep school environment. There was no physical discipline. For me the schools were a good environment.

Annnnnddddd..... there's the "no true Scotsman" claim  That didn't take long.

No true atheist thinks there is persuasive evidence for the existence of divinity.
Is this a reasonable claim or an NTS fallacy

Similarly, there really are people who are not only 'not true Christians' they aren't Christians at all!

I will resurrect the What Is A True Christian Thread, it went nowhere. There is no true Christian, there is nothing in the gospels that spells it out. JCC in the gospels was a Jewish rabbi preaching to Jews. His principles all had antecedents in the Torah.

If take the gospels as true, Jesus and the disciples believed the end was coming soon. That too was spun away by later theology.

Uhmmmmm. In Matthew, Mark and Luke we are told by Jesus to follow the 10 commandments and sell all you have and give to the poor.

Matthew 19
18He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

In the gospels he was a rabbi reinforcing Mosaic law to Jews, ny point. There is nothing attributed to JC that does not have a precursor in the Torah. Christianity evolved out of gentiles who were not Jewish. It was Paul who eliminated Jewish requirements like circumcision.

JC in the gospels to me was Jewish a reformer calling Jews back to the old values. Today anyone who declares him or her self to believe in JC is a Christian.

The result, the fragments often conventions American Christianity. Who by the way will accuse each other of not being true Christians.

Today anyone who declares him or her self to believe in JC is a Christian.

I have a problem with those who say they believe in JC, but don't follow any of the teachings enunciated by the teacher in the scriptures.

What good is belief when actual practice of that stated 'belief' is non-existant? It is nothing but empty handwaving....hypocrisy.

Read what was put in to Jesus' mouth by reading chapter 23 of the Gospel According to Matthew. The author was pretty clear. What I see these days is explicitly what Jesus condemned.

What are those teachings specifically. No fornication for sure, no divorce. From the 10 Commandments no lying or false witness.

Just that rules out a lot of Christian republicans and Christians in general. The meek shall inherit the Earth, turn the other cheek...pacifism?

Sorry, Christianity is what you interpret it to be. The closest thing to a cogent theology is The Sermon On The Mount.

Once in a while a story comes along that re-wraps me in the warm swaths of non-belief; the relief that comes with not having to make excuses for my god; not having to say some absurd and horribly insulting thing like, "God works in mysterious ways." I don't have to trivialize the humiliating and life altering horror done in the name, or the excuse of, or the denigrating not-on-behalf of some imaginary unicorn-like thing that forces me to pray to it and its representatives.

It's freeing beyond words to be able to deal with the simple reality that humans are indescribably inhumane sometimes. It hurts, but dammit, I don't have to lie about it, or deny, or pretend that some after-it-all thing is going to dispense justice. As awful as this story is, at least I know there isn't some cloud dwelling non-dimensional horror of a creator who lets it happen.

Bad Religion (a great band btw) can write better lines than their fucking Holy Book.
