Climate Change(d)?

... Our economics requires a growing population. With our low birth rate we need immigration to keep the economy going.

Same low birth rate problem in Russia, China, and Japan.

If you are in your 20s 30s today with a retirement plan you are gambling that involvements in the economy will show a net profit when you retire. IO)W a growing economy.

This is a common sentiment, but I think it is very misleading. Depending on how we define "keep the economy going", one can argue almost the opposite!

For ease of analysis let's set aside age-demographic changes, i.e. the growing number of retirees older than working age. (Anyway this is partly offset by the decrease in the portion of children younger than working age.)

It IS true that growth in asset prices, e.g. stock prices, may benefit from population growth. But what is good for corporations and billionaires is not necessarily what is best for ordinary people. The AVERAGE (arithmetic mean) savings for Americans approaching retirement age is rather high; and the booming stock market gives great financial security to millions of Americans. BUT focusing on the welfare of successful Americans misses the big picture. Almost half of Americans have no retirement savings at all; and this is of course much worse in most other countries. I wonder if using high stock prices as a proxy for prosperity is, to some extent, a propaganda ploy to distract Americans from their ever-shrinking "share of the pie."

Malthusian Population Dynamics: Theory and Evidence is an interesting 46-page paper I'm adding to my (already over-long) reading list; I mention it just as a source for the graph below. As seen in the graph, the typical worker in re-industrial England did NOT benefit from rising population: Just the opposite was the case. If instead you examine more recent data from the USA, you see a HUGE rise in GDP accompanied by record LOW population increases. This implies strong rises in GDP per capita, along with strong rises in housing prices and stock prices, BUT these gains have NOT been shared with the lowest-paid workers. It is no surprise that European countries with a better safety net show higher contentment and better mental health than the USA.

This ain't your daddy's Climate Change.

*sigh*
You should see the Chemtrails bill that DeSantis is bragging about signing. Whole GOP is nuts.

It's true that mental illness has been rising in the USA, with the latest lists from healthdata.org showing USA in a near-tie for the lead with Lebanon, Tunisia, Gaza, Iran, Portugal, Brazil and ... Australia! And among U.S. states, bright-red Utah scores #1 with a whopping 29.2% of the population suffering mental illness. (The numbers are normalized to account for varying reporting criteria.)

HOWEVER -- (and I don't know whether DeSantis fits in this group or not) -- many GOP leaders are more-or-less capable of rational thought but pretend to be mentally ill in order to retain the support of their Godfather, MAGATs, and campaign donors.

I for one would have much more affection for these varmints if they were REAL psychotics instead of poseurs. One of my best friends suffered from OCD so severe that she was written up in a psychology journal.
Agree. Most GOP leadership know they are lying when they push birther, truther, vaccine disinformation, chemtrails, weather control, etc… conspiracy theories. They made the calculation after Bush that they could get the “independent” vote by pandering to the Alex Jones/RFK crowd; and that doing so would not run off the GOP faithful. That is why they started pushing the FEMA death camp bullshit right off the bat in 2009 and then Trump started making the rounds with his birther bullshit in 2012. It worked like a charm. Now they have the best billionaire government they could ever want with the executive branch being nothing but punitive to people and supporting of oligarchs.

Having achieved that, they have RFK in the cabinet so the Infowars bloc is still on their team even if it is the most corporate friendly corrupt government any of us has ever lived under.

Remember, basically every accusation of theirs is a confession. Look at Brain Worm's ideas on mental health--that's going to amount to death camps because they'll "force" people to work to eat. Many won't be able to, especially when you suddenly take away the psychiatric drugs. Any of the brain-affecting drugs (even the ones that aren't mental health per se) take slow and careful weaning, suddenly stopping can really mess you up, in some cases permanently.

Oh no!! We are doomed!

The planet’s remaining carbon budget to meet the international target of 1.5C has just two years left at the current rate of emissions, scientists have warned, showing how deep into the climate crisis the world has fallen. Breaching the target would ramp up the extreme weather already devastating communities around the world. The latest assessment by leading climate scientists found that in order to achieve a 66% chance of keeping below the 1.5C target, emissions from 2025 onwards must be limited to 80bn tonnes of CO2. That is 80% lower than it was in 2020.

The demand for cheap energy is constantly rising. Only "fossil" fuel can meet that demand.

This obsession with CO2 needs to stop.

It's a bit of a scorcher in Los Angeles today, 80 degrees. I'm not sure if this will deter or encourage the rioters. And with tomorrow being Juneteenth (WTF?) maybe there will be some action on the streets.

Climate-change caused species collapse moving up food chain, wiping out insects.

Of course, as we all know, all that really matters is the daily weather report in Santa Monica, and the status of the stock portfolio of one of its residents.
It is helping ticks though in Canada.

If it makes you feel better, we've passed the threshold. We are, for the most part, locked in.

Nuclear can provide us the energy we need, greatly reducing CO2 emissions. But Libs stopped that in the 70s/80s, and NIMBYs won't allow it today.

Department of Energy Order No. 202-25-5 said:
Pursuant to the authority vested in the Secretary of Energy by section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act (FPA), 16 U.S.C. § 824a(c), and section 301(b) of the Department of Energy Organization Act, 42 U.S.C. § 7151(b), and for the reasons set forth below, I hereby determine that an emergency exists within the Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC (“Duke Energy”) service territory due to a shortage of electric energy, a shortage of facilities for the generation of electric energy, and other causes, and that issuance of this Order will meet the emergency and serve the public interest.
Why is the Trump Admin forcing the Electric Company to go balls to the wall in the Southeast when the weather is so pleasant in Southern California?

And why the hell can't government PDFs insert a damn space at the end of lines!?

It is a catastrophic 63 degrees in Santa Monica this morning but climate change will occur and it will be a balmy 76 degrees later today. 😎⛱️☀️

It will stop when we either get our act together and deal with it, or it finishes dealing with us. Unfortunately, I consider the latter far more likely at this point.

And it was almost 100 F in New York City and Boston who cares as long as it's nice in Santa Monica. It was in the upper 90s in Indy earlier this week, only about 10 or so degrees about normal, but that means nothing since Santa Monica is not so hot. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/24/world/canada/toronto-heat-wave.html

96 or higher in parts of Canada don't matter as long as it's a lovely day in Santa Monica. Do the people in Santa Monica ever bother to check how the weather in other places?

The extreme heat that is baking parts of the northeast United States has also settled over Toronto and parts of eastern Canada for the third day in a row, pushing many Canadians indoors to seek air-conditioned relief.

The heat led to the temporary closings of some public pools because it was too hot for lifeguards to work, according to local regulations, much to the consternation of many residents.

Temperatures in Toronto on Monday reached 36 degrees Celsius, or 97 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the city’s hottest day since July 13, 2016, according to Environment Canada, which runs a federal meteorological service.

The stifling heat continued into Tuesday, with Toronto recording an afternoon temperature of nearly 36 degrees Celsius, or 96 degrees Fahrenheit, with high humidity readings making conditions even more sticky and unpleasant.

This reminds me of streaming on PlutoTV or the other "free" streaming services. You see the same ad, over and over and over... and it gets so annoying. Why are they repeating it over and over? Isn't there anything else to advertise or say? They couldn't possibly be doing this on purpose, that'd be daft.

To note, it isn't about one day or a few days. It has been hot before. It is the enduring heat waves that make it notable and new. A week, month long, summer long records. What I'm noting is the forecast is usually underpredicting the highs recently. The models are struggling to adapt.

Overall, June was about average in the region until June 20th, then it got hot.

While sea level changes will be a concern, the bigger issues will be more related to general standards of living and insurance concerns regarding more 100 yr level+ events and common rapid hurricane intensification.

To say nothing of rising heat. It is already being forecast that large parts of the Middle East may become uninhabitable. I guess that is one unfortunate solution to the problems there.

But hey, as long as Santa Monica is not (currently) underwater, it’s all good.

Surely you must be familiar with the concept of summer and summer heatwaves?

A few hot days in the summer is not unusual. In fact it is quite common.

It is a balmy 74 degrees today and a slight breeze. ☀️ ⛱️ 😎

Good grief. These aren't normal heatwaves. These are record breaking, highly unusual heatwaves related to the climate. But of course, you. know more than all the highly educated climate scientists that keep reporting the evidence. Keep up! Read some science journals. Have you ever read anything about the fact that many recent years have been hotter than anything ever recorded? Do you not understand that lots of people are suffering from heatstroke, to the point that some are dying?

Yes. I think by now we all now about the balmy weather in Santa Monica, but considering the speed at which the ice is melting in places like Greenland and the Arctic, it may not be too long before balmy Santa Monica floods as other posters have mentioned.

I used to visit the Outer Banks quite often when I lived in North Carolina, but now houses in parts of the Banks, are literally falling into the sea. The coastline is sinking for fuck's sake. Okay. Now give me a nice eye roll if you can't think of anything intelligent to say. Trying to discuss this with you is like trying to reason with a Trump supporter. Oh wait....That's what we're doing.....I guess we should know better by now. :rolleyesa:
