Conservatives in 2016: "Operation Jade Helm11!11!!!" "The Deep State" "Obama can't deploy the military because of Comitatus Posse!" "I am for small government just like the Founding Fathers because of tyranny." "Don't tread on me!" "The tree of liberty..."

Conservatives in 2020: "Defund the police???!! Are you crazy!?" "Trump wants to label anti-fascists as terrorists and use military on civilians? Good! I will get my guns and join in."

[Then they bend over and lube up.]

Can someone please explain this to me?

Well sure, republicans are hypocrites! We all knew that. So are the dems sometimes. Their kooky base wants smaller government. But they know that most people want security and safety. The defund the police movement is the greatest gift to republicans.

Well there is the Republican public stated principles and values, and then there are their actual principles and values.

Their publicly stated P&V are ones the party might have actually held long ago, but have degraded to buzz words/ talking points/ stuff they just use to attack Democrats. Stuff like smaller government, fiscal responsibility, free speech, fair elections, rule of law, honoring the troops, civil rights,

Republican actual principles: none detected
actual values: money & power

Because "defund the police" does not mean "defund the police and have the government spend less". It means "defund the police and direct all of that money into welfare for people of colour".

To be fair, they mean small government for white people. You do need a strong and heavy hand from the authorities in order to keep the ... umm ... what's a polite way to phrase this ... to keep the niggers in their place.

Defund the police means to create new systems of safety, security, and how to handle emergencies. So, if someone calls 911 because their nephew is having a mental breakdown, some other institutional entity could be called to help, rather than necessarily police. Or if a woman is raped, then she might go somewhere else to get that rape kit done. OR the other thing is police do not need all that SWAT gear and to show up with it, like they are a military against civilians. If any money were to go elsewhere, it's LOCAL funding, not federal...which likely means to education since that is usually huge in local budgets, rather than specifically to people of color or whatever.

Finally, when I see conservatives going nuts over this, it's usually about hero worship.

A few possible factors I can think of:

1. Part of it is probably the riots, which lead some conservatives to support maintaining the police and using the military to restore order. I don't think that's too hard to understand. If you see widespread looting and violence in the streets, you'll want cops (and maybe soldiers, depending on your perspective).

2. In addition, my understanding is that conservatives have always been more pro-police and pro-military.

3. This is more speculative, but I think emotionally, conservatives are pretty freaked out right now. The Overton window in America has shifted way, way to the left over just the course of the last week. Conservative views that were socially acceptable a week ago, like that institutional racism is not a thing, are now widely considered racist and white supremacist. I think this helps explain why some of them are in favor of extreme measures like bringing in the military - they don't know what is going to happen.

But yes, American politics is based on pragmatism and tribalism. I doubt either party is really consistent.

I suspect one political party is ever so slightly more hypocritical than the other. The both sides argument stopped being relevant or even remotely equivalent when one of those sides started describing white supremacists as very fine people.

Oh, good grief they're not. It's rigid partisanship. Anyone who says otherwise is just blind to their own partisanship.

You feigned confusion as to why 'conservatives' don't want to defund the police is obvious, but perhaps you meant it to be. (Conservatives are, I suppose, now 80% of the population is conservative, because I'm certain if you polled people 'should we defund the police' the overwhelming answer would be 'are you fucking crazy' and/or 'no'.)

Your OP is dishonest. You admit that defunding the police will do nothing to shrink the size of government but you claim that 'conservatives' are hypocrites for rejecting the idea on the notion that it will shrink government.

What are you talking about? Everything you wrote is a bizarre misinterpretation of what I wrote.

Some advocates of it want to do just that:

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/06/us/what-is-defund-police-trnd/index.html

https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/...n-george-floyd-black-lives-matter/5317240002/

"It’s not just about taking away money from the police, it’s about reinvesting those dollars into black communities. Communities that have been deeply divested from, communities that, some have never felt the impact of having true resources. And so we have to reconsider what we’re resourcing. I've been saying we have an economy of punishment over an economy of care," Patrisse Cullors, a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, told WBUR.

https://indivisible.org/defund-police-and-invest-black-communities

Call on your own local and state officials and tell them to defund your local police department and invest those funds in resources people need in Black communities, Indigenous communities, and communities of color.

But sure. "No it doesn't".

Operative word "some."

Other operative word "welfare" and also words "NOT welfare."

Doubt it. Conservatives are smart. They want political power. They know very well that most Americans will interpret "defund the police" as give in to the criminals. They will run on this, they will run hard. Of course Biden came out against defunding. Minutes later, Trump accused him of wanting to defund the police! The left just gives the right so many easy political openings (defund police, socialists, and etc and etc.)

You don't get it. Trump is playing 3D chess and you are playing tiddly winks. The idea that Defund the Police has anything to do with Biden isn't his goal as he's not trying to win an election he can't win. At this point, it's about people on the ground, how many, how many can be arrested, how far the military and police will go, and who has guns. Defund the Police is a paltry political debate on a stage in a sinking ship. It's rearranging deck chairs. Hair Furor will name Antifa terrorists as the Russians continue to destabilize our country and create division. They will be blamed for scaring voters and terrorism in November and he will not leave office. This isn't a debate about the nuances of fucking economic policy or how the Democrats can drape themselves in Republican lite rhetoric so as to avoid an electoral loss. It's about how conservatives are backing proto-fucking-facism after all the decades about the tyranny of government. The guns are not for defense against tyranny--they will be used to support it.
