Covid-19 Relief Bill - What you need to know

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "We were also told ..." / Twitter
We were also told the reason adult dependents (ppl w/ disabilities, college students, etc) were left out from survival checks again is bc Trump wants checks ASAP & said including adult dependents would “slow it down,” so he flat out refused - but that excuse doesn’t make sense /1

Last time $ went out, Treasury had to process all kinds of ppl & sent cash in waves as they got info.

They still have the setup to send out that 💰. So why not send out checks to whoever you can ASAP & roll out to dependents, even if it’s not on the same biz day, like last time?
Tracie Cone on Twitter: "@AOC My BIL has lost all services and support and gets nothing. Developmentally delayed adults have been lost in this and don’t understand why." / Twitter

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "@Tracie_Cone It’s totally inexcusable and inhumane. I’m so sorry that this is happening to your family.

We need to hear an actual public explanation from the WH and McConnell about why they are blocking relief for adult dependents. It’s deeply wrong." / Twitter

Trump calls on Congress to approve $2,000 stimulus checks, hinting that he might not sign economic relief bill into law without changes - The Washington Post - "The president has still not signed the measure even though it passed Monday night. He called the measure “a disgrace.”"
In a video posted to Twitter, Trump called on Congress to increase the “ridiculously low” $600 stimulus checks to $2,000, and outlined a list of provisions in the final legislation that he described as “wasteful spending and much more.” He did not mention that the $600 stimulus check idea came from his own Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin.

“I am also asking Congress to immediately get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items from this legislation, and to send me a suitable bill, or else the next administration will have to deliver a covid relief package, and maybe that administration will be me,” Trump said.
At least Trump is doing the right thing.

Rashida Tlaib on Twitter: "Me and @AOC have the amendment ready. Send the bill back, and we will put in the $2,000 we’ve been fighting for that your party has been blocking. https://t.co/GGXtJt77D9" / Twitter
AMENDMENT TO RULES COMMITTEE PRINT 16-68
OFFERED BY MS. TLAIB OF MICHIGAN

In section 6428A of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as proposed to be inserted by section 272 of subtitle B of title II of division N of the matter proposed to be inserted by the Rules Committee Print-

(1) in subsection (a)(1), strike "$600 ($1,200 in the case of eligible individuals filing joint return) and insert "$2,000 ($4,000 in the case of eligible individuals filing a joint return)", and

(2) in subsection (g), strike "$600" each place it appears and insert "$2,000", and strike "$1,200" and insert "$4,000".

So they can accomplish this, but they can't also add in language to strike the bullshit about streaming and copyright?

This whole bill is garbage, and one part of it doing one important thing for the American people can't save that.

Trump's veto threat at this late hour is simply one more thing that he can use as a wreaking ball. I don't think he cares a whit about getting more money out to those who are suffering. Anyone following the news would have known that this bill would not contain much for people on the financial brink. Trump has been AWOL this whole time. To chime in now lets him say that he wanted more money for those who need while at the same time making things worse. He wants Biden to fail and he wants Republicans who do not lick his butt hole to fail.

If Trump truly wanted this bill to help people he would have been engaged in the process weeks ago. This veto threat is again only about what's good for him.

jordan on Twitter: "Amy Klobuchar just went on MSNBC to call raising the stimulus to $2,000 per person "an attack on every American" and suggests Congress override Trump's veto. https://t.co/mEdDUY9dNu" / Twitter
Seems that Sen. Klobuchar has been quoted out of context in that tweet. She was saying that we ought to go ahead with what we have rather than waste time with another vote.

Eric Blair 🔥 on Twitter: "@JordanUhl What Klobuchar actually said:
"Unemployment will end the day after Christmas if this doesn't pass. Vaccine distribution is in this, $30B. $300B to help small businesses."

You're right they should have never gotten here and held out for more. But she's not totally wrong." / Twitter

jordan on Twitter: "@protecttruth_ Congressional Dems are largely saying yes, increase to $2K, here's the amendment. She's breaking with them to call for an override. In no way is she right." / Twitter

Councilman Tony Heyl on Twitter: "@JordanUhl @protecttruth_ C'mon man, I'm not a big Amy fan and you're not an idiot. She knows that a Trump veto likely means that this funding doesn't pass. The House Dems and even all Dems can support bigger checks, but that doesn't mean it passes all Congress. She's not wrong here." / Twitter

David Eichler on Twitter: "@JordanUhl You don't seem to grasp what is going on here. The bill is a compromise that was very hard to achieve. There is no time to go back and redo it. It might seem simple to some to just change one piece, but all the pieces are interrelated and that won't work." / Twitter

Carey Jo on Twitter: "@JordanUhl Democrats tried to get a higher stimulus this whole time and finally had to majorly compromise because people need the help NOW! This delay is a game that will hurt Americans. Terrible GOP!" / Twitter

Ahmed Baba on Twitter: "@JordanUhl This is wildly disingenuous and you know it. First off, she didn’t say the $2k was an attack, she was talking about the veto threat. Secondly, I saw this live. It was shortly after 9pm ET. Pelosi’s tweet was still fresh. Dems didn’t have their messaging in order yet. Now they do." / Twitter

I was trying to see Congressional progress on enacting laws. This only gets back to Nixon/Ford, but there seems an abrupt change of business once Clinton becomes President. Things pick up under W a bit, but still lower than the 70s/80s. And Obama becomes President and it gets even slower. This last Congress was one of the worst, which might explain why a zillion things need to pass in an Omnibus bill.

I made a nice chart and all, but I can't make with uploading it. (okay, it appears to have attached, but won't insert into the post. Whatevs.

Regardless, Once the Republicans started getting majorities, things devolved and the ability to pass legislation since the Contract to Fuck Over America has been made more difficult. Hence these monstrosity omnibus bills, because only the fear of economic calamity seems to get legislation of any importance passed.

I just picked up on that a week long funding extension was passed on 12/21 which is why we aren't shutdown... yet. I believe it is 10 days that Trump has to veto before it becomes law one way or the other.

But it's more or less a wrecking ball against McConnell and other Rs that haven't supported Trump's seditious abuse of the judicial process, and this wrecking ball will actually put money in the hands of millions of hungry Americans. Win/win. It's about time someone other than corrupt morons benefitted from the fickle temper of the toddler king.

No, it’s just Trump keeping his promise. He said in 2018 he wouldn’t again sign a bill like this. He seems the only one in DC willing to call out Congress for it’s waste and corruption. (Biden would never do this). And years before he ran for office he was openly critical of taxpayer dollars sent overseas. He’s on brand now.

It was Trump who insisted that the Covid Relief bill be combined with the Omnibus bill.

He insisted on $700M to Sudan and $40M to the Kennedy Center (which has half a billion in assets)? And he insisted that no one would know what was in the bill - save the leaders of the house and senate - until hours before a vote was called?

Nope, but lets be serious here. It's Trump Mmkay? Nothing he does is ever all good.

Trump also seems to fly by the Wagstaff Doctrine. He is that idiot that always has the "great ideas" after the fact.

If Trump wanted everyone to get a payment of $2k and he wasn't going to sign a bill without that, why the hell did they write a bill with $600 payment ?

Trump, err, Mnuchin had offered a $1.9T Covid stimulus before the election. Pelosi said no. After the election she okay’d a $900B stimulus with McConnell. (No indication Trump had any say in the number.) Yeah, politics.

Meanwhile in "apparently we needed to sell out in order to just get a fucking budget passed the GOP"...

article said:
No break is bigger, however, than the deductions that will soon be permitted under the Paycheck Protection Program. Businesses had been lobbying the Treasury Department and the IRS since the spring to deduct spending from PPP loans, but Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was firmly opposed, saying deducting expenditures from funds not considered taxable income violated “Tax 101.”

The PPP was the most visible part of the federal government’s coronavirus relief efforts in the spring to keep small businesses afloat. So far, the government has distributed more than $500 billion in loans, which could be forgiven and turned into permanent grants as long as the businesses use most of the money to pay workers and keep people employed.
So umm... they woudn't get taxed on the free money... and use of said free money is now deductible. Can I deduct the check I received?
