My wife and I just arrived in Auckland NZ for two very pleasant, sunny days. We board a cruise ship (Celebrity Solstice) tomorrow for a leisurely trip to Perth, Australia.

Category 4 Cyclone Gita will likely slam into New Zealand on Tuesday (local time). By the time it reaches our ship on the other side of the island, it should be no worse than category 2, hopefully. Anyway, I just wanted to say goodbye and thank you for all the fish that will likely be flopping around on our stateroom balcony.

Hope you are well.

After reading your message I checked the New Zealand channel. It was category 5 and will stay around for days.

I guess the path of Gita will affect your area with lots of rain.

I am writing here because I would like to visit New Zealand one day.

Anyway, hope your vacations be great, lots of Fergburgers, kumara and Pavlova...

I don't know whether to laugh or be worried for you :p You post is perfectly toned, but a Cat 2 is nothing to sneeze at... especially on a cruise ship.

OTOH, you may get a few extra days of cruise while the ship avoids the hurricane. Plan accordingly.

The media tend to exaggerate reports of hurricane strength. It is heading into cooler waters now, so the expectation is no worse than category 4 when it hits. By the time it reaches our side of the island, it should be no worse than 2 and possibly weaker. Still, the captain may choose to flee to safer waters rather than risk heavy exposure.

I hope your captain is a smart man.

Celebrity now has one woman captain. We don't yet know who our captain will be yet, but we do know it won't be her. In any case, all decisions regarding changes to itinerary require consultation with the "suits" in Miami. I'm usually quite happy with the level of competence in officers on this line. I'm not worried about them taking precautions, because I've been on cruises where they chose to divert in cases of potential threat no matter how much it pissed off passengers.

Rather boring outcome. The hurricane passed south of us and barely rocked the boat. We are in Sydney today. Next, we visit Hobart, Adelaide, and Perth. We get back home around March 8.

Hah! You were hoping to go through the hurricane!
