Will the Trumpian war on DEI backfire? His white base may not think so, but it easily could do so. It may be true that it will hurt African-Americans, but it might help Asian-Americans. Asian-Americans are already over-achieving in the academic arena., and have done so for a long time. If hiring is based purely on merit, then that should give them a significant advantage in the job marketplace, as many Ivy League schools have already noticed. Will that lead to more than the relatively mild resentment on the part of Trump's white base?

Of course Trump believes in advancement by merit alone. Bootstrapping man. If Trump could pull himself up with a paltry 413 million inheritance; so can lazy liberals.

Yeah... That is not really what anti-DEI is about.
The basic premise of DEI is not all physically able white men are competent fill any office or position, so non white people and those who may not make the track team, should be considered for various jobs.
There has always been a cadre of white men in the USA who believe society is obligated to support them in their careers and other endeavors, at the expense of non male non white people. As a rule, the men in this cadre are fairly stupid and easily manipulated. If you tell him the reason he doesn't have the high paying union job in a factory that his grandfather enjoyed is because a Mexican is picking tomatoes in the sun, someplace in California, he'll accept it as a fact without questioning what Mexicans on fruit farms have to do with anything. He is certain that deporting Mexicans will raise his standard of living. This is not as silly as it sounds when we consider our President believes Haitians in Springfield are eating family pets.
There really aren't many things stupider than a stupid white man and the stupidest of white men equate wealth with intelligence. This is the result of hearing the taunt, "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" so often, he comes to believe one must be smart in able to accrue wealth.
