Democrats trying to unseat each other

Leftwing Texan inspired by Ocasio-Cortez in bid to upset top Republican | US news | The Guardian - Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez
Originally from Ohio, Tzintzún Ramirez has called Texas home since 2000. One of her first roles in politics was organizing Latino immigrant workers. She eventually served as executive director of the Workers Defense Project, which provided aid and representation to construction workers.

This is the first attempt at running for office for Tzintzún Ramirez, a working mom who hopes to articulate what it means to be a progressive and deliver real change for marginalized communities in Texas and the US.
AOC's success inspired her, and she appreciates AOC's endorsement of her.
Tzintzún Ramirez shares a similar origin story with Ocasio-Cortez. The child of an immigrant, and an underdog in an important race, she is no stranger to difficult odds, having fought for construction workers and immigrants through organizations she founded like the Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC) and the Better Builder Program.

AOC reminds us that it's not just Presidential primaries that are today, but also some Congressional ones.

Super Tuesday is done, and it's disappointing for the would-be unseaters.

In CA-25, Cenk Uygur got only 1/6 of the vote that Christy Smith got. She is a CA state legislator favored by Katie Hill.

In CA-12, Shahid Buttar got only 1/6 of the vote that Nancy Pelosi got. But he finished second, and the two will be going head-to-head in the main election. Agatha Bacelar got only 1.4% of the vote. Some people have been documenting AB's run in "Knock Down The House" fashion, and it will be interesting to see what becomes of that.

For Texas Senate, M.J. Hegar won, with about 22.5% of the vote (99% precincts counted). AOC-backed candidate Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez was third with 13.7% of the vote, though she's just behind Royce West with 13.9% of the vote. So it will be one of those two against M.J. Hegar in a runoff. Another progressive candidate, Sema Hernandez, got 7.9% of the vote.

In the House, a BNC-backed candidate, Michael Siegel (TX-10) advanced to a runoff and another one, Adrienne Bell (TX-14) became the Democratic candidate.

But a progressive candidate with a lot of backing, Jessica Cisneros (TX-28), barely lost, 48.2% to incumbent Henry Cuellar's 51.8%.

There will be a similar chance two weeks from now, when Marie Newman (IL-03) is up against Dan Lipinski.

Super Tuesday showed that the Dem establishment is not interested in the lefty progressives. They should start their own party. Call it the CPUSA or something.

Trausti, is that what you said about the Tea Partiers? That if they don't like the Republican leadership, that they should start their own party.

I think that they understand Duverger's Law well enough to know that starting a separate party is a recipe for political impotence and irrelevance. Brand New Congress's founders certainly did. They wanted to set up a European-style political party, but the only way that they could do so and be viable in US politics was to run their candidates inside the two existing parties. They originally planned to run candidates in both the Democratic and Republican Parties, and as appropriate, Independents. They originally wanted 400 candidates, but they settled on 30, all Democrats except for 1 Republican and 1 Independent. Of these, about 10 won primaries, and only one won a main election -- AOC.

This time around, BNC is running 40 candidates, all Democrats.

Cuellar edges out liberal challenger in Texas - POLITICO
Cisneros conceded Wednesday morning but struck a defiant tone, saying her race was proof "a brown girl from the border with a whole community behind her could take on the machine."

"This is just the beginning," she said in a statement. "The first thing we had to defeat was the culture of fear — and our movement was victorious in proving we're within striking distance of bringing fundamental change to South Texas.”

"As someone who was also outspent 10 to 1, she can absolutely pull it off. But if she doesn't pull it off, I don't think we've seen the last of her," Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview shortly before the election.

...
Her near-miss is likely to embolden a score of liberal primary challengers hoping to take out House Democrats, including two later this month. In Illinois, Democrat Marie Newman is making another run at Rep. Dan Lipinski who, like Cuellar, also opposes abortion rights. And in Ohio, Rep. Joyce Beatty faces a stiff challenge from consumer advocate Morgan Harper.

Cenk Uygur Reflects on His Congressional Campaign - YouTube - he ran in CA-25 and he lost big in the Democratic primary - only about 1/6 of the votes of the winner, Christy Smith.

CU stands by calling CS corrupted by big money, and ask why he supports CS, he said that it isn't as if her Republican opponent isn't as least as corrupted by big money. Mike Garcia called former Rep Stephen Knight a Never Trumper, though SK voted with Trump about 99% of the time.

Then they talked about CS trying to get him to quit running, and Ana Kasparian considered CS just as bad as the Republican, MG. CU nevertheless supports voting for her, even if not campaigning for her or financing her campaign. Then the two talked about how CS's snout is in the trough of big corporate money.

CU suspects in the end that he lost from lack of name recognition. That means that Marie Newman may have a better chance this time around. In 2018, she lost 48.9% - 51.1%

As someone who grew up with a single parent, living paycheck to paycheck, I can feel the anxiety and stress taking hold of families across the country right now. This crisis has laid bare the brutality of American life as we know it.

As I’ve been taking the news in, I’ve been thinking about the importance of down-ballot races. We are seeing in real time how important it is to have public servants in our communities who will fight for us, be there for us, and lead us forward. That’s why I’m endorsing @mh4oh.

It’s no secret I’m proud to call Columbus home. But there are challenges too. I’m deeply concerned about police brutality as well as the impact of gentrification on the city’s longtime residents. I believe @mh4oh will work to make sure we ALL get to be proud of our home.

I’ve talked with @mh4oh in her home and office a LOT over the last few months. She’s a real one and understands that the system as it is ain’t working for most of us. I believe in her dreams for the 3rd District. I believe we deserve to have a leader like her in office.

I hope you will translate the anxiety we’re all processing right now into a renewed and urgent focus on down ballot races in your state. This is how we can fight for our lives; this is how we can save ourselves and each other. We aren’t helpless. Let’s take action together.
@mh4oh is Morgan Harper, a progressive candidate in OH-03. Her primary election is on Mar 17.

AOC's Courage to Change PAC has run two candidates, against right-wing incumbent Democrats. It's close enough for DL to request a recount, so I don't want to celebrate too fast.

In Texas, Cristina Tzintzun Ramirez (TX-SEN) is in third place, so she won't advance to the runoff. But Donna Imam (TX-31), another progressive candidate, is in second place, and she did advance. Texas will have a runoff election on May 26, so DI may become the Democratic candidate for her district.

Checking on IL-03 with ballotpedia.org I find that Dan Lipinski won previous elections at 65% - 75%, so unless Marie Newman is very negligent, she will likely win the main election.

Marie Newman defeats Dan Lipinski in progressive vs. moderate rematch - Chicago Tribune - Rematch: after Jessica Cisneros barely lost to Henry Cuellar.
The businesswoman from La Grange ended nearly four decades of Lipinski family control of the Southwest Side and southwest suburban congressional seat. The congressman’s father, William Lipinski, served from 1983 until 2005, when he engineered the appointment of his son.

... Lipinski canceled a scheduled media appearance Tuesday night and did not concede defeat.

“As we close this evening, there are still votes to be counted in this race. It is very close," Lipinski said in a statement. "We may have to wait overnight or into the morning for the final vote count.”

Two years ago, Lipinski led on election night and Newman refused to concede. She kept him waiting, saying she wished for “Mr. Lipinski to have a very painful evening.” She conceded the contest the following day.
Back in 2018, DL beat MN by 2.2%, or 2,145 votes out of 95,205.
The coronavirus pandemic disrupted campaigning in the final days. Lipinski spokesman Phil Davidson said Monday that the congressman felt good about early voting returns but that the campaign lost a chance for a final push when Sunday’s South Side Irish Parade was canceled.

“Irish Catholics? The 19th Ward? That’s our base,” Davidson said. “The opportunity just vaporized.”

Indeed, it was the Southwest Side wards that helped carry Lipinski to his narrow victory over Newman in 2018.
I was wondering who the virus might have helped. Old voters because young ones would be more worried about it? Young voters because old ones would stay home more?

That Chicago Tribune article again:
Newman received the backing of presidential candidate and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Lipinski enjoyed the support of numerous local officials, including more than two dozen suburban mayors, and the muscle of Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s political organization.
DL is anti-abortion and anti-Obamacare -- he's one of the most conservative Democrats.

The New York Times article:
“This is a critical victory for the progressive movement in showing that voters are ready for a new generation of progressive leadership in the Democratic Party,” said Alexandra Rojas, executive director of Justice Democrats. “This isn’t just a loss for one incumbent. It’s a defeat for machine politics and big corporate donors who want to stop our movement for ‘Medicare for all,’ a Green New Deal and reproductive rights.”
About DL,
... In addition to voting against the 2010 health care law and opposing abortion rights, he declined to endorse former President Barack Obama in 2012 and opposed same-sex marriage until the Supreme Court made it legal across the nation in 2015.

Nancy Pelosi had dropped in to support Henry Cuellar against Jessica Cisneros, but she didn't do so for DL.
And Mr. Lipinski’s fellow Illinoisan, Representative Cheri Bustos, who leads the party’s campaign arm, canceled a planned fund-raiser for Mr. Lipinski last year, bowing to progressives who were outraged by the congressman’s anti-abortion rights stance. Her decision raised questions about whether there was room left in the party for lawmakers who oppose abortion.

The day after Ms. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Ms. Newman, Representative Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, a centrist Democrat and the majority leader, told reporters that there was “absolutely” room in the party for candidates who oppose abortion rights. But some veteran rank-and-file Democrats, including two others from Illinois, Representatives Jan Schakowsky and Luis Gutiérrez, openly backed Ms. Newman.

...
Ms. Newman had the backing of groups that support abortion rights, including Planned Parenthood and Naral, as well as several unions and Indivisible, the grass-roots advocacy group. Even before all the votes were counted on Tuesday night, Emily’s List issued a statement congratulating her on the victory, calling her “a proven fighter for working families.”

1982 - Bill Lipinski - 2005 - Dan Lipinski - 2020
Dan got his seat from father Bill, and he has now gone the way of Joe Crowley.

Rep. Dan Lipinski falls in Democratic primary - POLITICO
Newman, who came within 2,200 votes of ousting Lipinski in 2018, crafted a formidable and well-funded campaign operation for the rematch. Her turnout operation knocked over 100,000 doors and she nabbed early endorsements from nearly every high-profile progressive, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

That support helped Newman tap a groundswell of grassroots donors from around the country. She raised upwards of $1.6 million and was outspending Lipinski by a two-to-one margin on the air.

A coalition of women’s groups, including EMILY’s List and NARAL Pro-Choice, funneled $1 million into TV ads to help Newman, but Lipinski was left to fend for himself on the airwaves, a dynamic that made his team nervous heading into the election.
DL's campaigners got rather desperate, it seems. They invited Republicans to vote for him. Also, "(knocking) over" doors is a typo - if MN's campaigners had been that destructive, it would have been big news.

Marie Newman Upsets Conservative Democrat Dan Lipinski in Illinois Congressional Primary
Newman’s race appeared to be in trouble when, in Chicago and surrounding areas, voter turnout on Tuesday was “extremely low,” as the Chicago Tribune reported. Voters fielded competing guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Democratic Party officials when deciding whether to vote.

Analysts, and some primary candidates, said in the lead-up to Tuesday’s votes that the spread of coronavirus could very well help to protect incumbents and disadvantage insurgent campaigns relying on new voter turnout.

NUMEROUS POLLING PLACES in Illinois shut down Tuesday, while others lacked necessary voting and sanitizing supplies, resulting in hourslong delays.

Progressive Marie Newman Beats Abortion Rights Foe Rep. Dan Lipinski In Democratic Race | HuffPost
A local businesswoman who went on to start a national anti-bullying non-profit, Newman, 55, has endorsed much of the Sanders-Warren agenda — from a $15 federal minimum wage to Medicare For All, a Green New Deal and partial student debt cancellation.

She ousted one of the more conservative House Democrats on social issues, especially abortion. A devout Catholic, the 53-year-old Lipinski voted against the Affordable Care Act because of its mandate that employer insurance plans cover birth control. He has supported defunding Planned Parenthood and clinics that offer abortion services, and has sided with Republicans on bills that would ban abortions at 20 weeks into a woman’s pregnancy.

He also joined Republicans in signing a legal briefing urging the Supreme Court to revisit the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights case.
MN presented herself as the "real Democrat", while DL depicted her as too radical and wanting to take away people's healthcare with "Medicare for All".

Last year, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced that it would not be doing business with any challengers of Democratic incumbents.
As a result, Newman lost several political consultants and several direct mail firms. Despite that, Newman repeatedly out-fundraised Lipinski.

Tuesday’s primary was marked by lower turnout than initially expected because of the coronavirus outbreak that election officials said likely scared voters from going to the polls. In the last week, Newman’s campaign was forced to cancel its planned door-knocking and typical get-out-the-vote operation. Instead, the campaign focused on its phone-bank operation ing and social media efforts to get people to take advantage of early voting.

Some opponents of abortion wept at this loss.
Lipinski loses primary - the Catholic News Agency
Lipinski is a Catholic eight-term representative of Illinois’ third congressional district, on the south side of Chicago. He is recognized as the last reliably pro-life Democrat in the House of Representatives, bucking the party whip to support pro-life legislation, including supporting “pain-capable” 20-week abortion bans and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

...
The president of the pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List, Marjorie Dannenfelser, offered her “condolences” to Lipinski on Wednesday.

“Congressman Lipinski has long been a profile in courage, bucking the sad trend of Democrat leaders vying to be the greatest advocate of abortion. We are deeply grateful for his bravery in standing strong,” Dannenfelser said.

“The expulsion of this pro-life hero from Congress by his own party is an ominous sign for pro-life Democrats and all who long to see both major parties hold a principled stance in favor of life,” she said.
The article called MN "pro-abortion".
Newman said that she was baptized Catholic at a local parish, in a campaign video that highlighted her ties to the district. She also secured the support of two nuns, Sisters JoAnn Persch and Pat Murphy of the Sisters of Mercy, who endorsed her in a campaign video.
So MN is likely a "cradle Catholic".

Dan Lipinski concedes: Could not overcome low Chicago vote, progressive strength - Chicago Sun-Times
Lipinski, at a press conference at his Oak Lawn campaign office, said it was “unlikely” the results would change when the ballots are fully counted.

“I don’t want to be seen as dragging this out,” said Lipinski, flanked by his wife, Judy. “it appears right now she has the votes to win.”

The latest unofficial returns gives Newman 47.1% of the vote to 44.7% for Lipinski, with Newman’s winning margin 2,476 votes. In 2018, Lipinski squeezed through the primary with 2,145 votes.

Marie Newman on Her Big Victory: ‘You Have to Be in Alignment With Your District’ - The New York Times - has a nice interview with her.

What the election means:
You know, this is the beginning of a new era in Illinois-3. For the last 38 years, the representative seat has been occupied by a member of the Lipinski family — Dan’s dad had it for 22 years and Dan’s had it for the last 16 years. So nearly 40 years of the Lipinski family in that seat. And they’re members of the Chicago machine.

So what this does is put the district in alignment with its representatives. For many years, Dan was one of the most conservative members of the Democratic Party bar none — if not the most. Our district is a deeply blue Democratic district, so I ran on the platform that I’m a real Democrat with a real plan. And it’s kind of that simple.

I believe in working families, health care for all, and making sure that we have a livable wage.
She considers herself more representative of the district than her predecessor. Sort of like AOC vs. Joe Crowley.
