• Welcome to the Internet Infidels Discussion Board.

Do you think any aliens exist in the universe?

I think that is significantly likely but not definite. Like how animals are slaughtered and skinned for my food I don't really want to think about it too much.
So … you are a solipsist.
I believe people outside of the simulation are conscious though so maybe I'm not a perfect solipsist. It's like being in a dream where the other characters aren't truly other individuals.

You believe we are in a simulation, which has been shown to be impossible, and only you are conscious in this simulation, along with the simulators outside of it?

I guess you do not realize how daft this is?
Dude.

So, what … we are all p zombies inside a video game except for you?

You realize there is a difference between a simulation and a video game?
Well I'm talking about video games (like the Roy game) because people can think simulations require every single atom to be faithfully simulated, etc.
TBH, and trying not to be offensive, this is not mentally healthy thinking,
I've said that before. Also I don't think it would be a good idea for me to watch the animals I'm going to eat be killed, skinned, gutted, etc, even though that would involve me facing reality.

Yes, you should face reality.

You believe we are in a simulation, which has been shown to be impossible,
It talked about a simulation that required Gödel’s incompleteness theorem to be addressed in order to work. AI simulations, which it made no mention of, don't require that.

You don't seem to be an expert in generative AI which is the foundation of what I'm talking about.

Yes, you should face reality.
And watch animals get killed, skinned, and gutted? I did watch Cannibal Holocaust that showed a giant turtle having its shell removed and I felt quite traumatized.

AI simulations are algorithmic. The cited article says no such algorithms can succeed in doing what you claim.

This reply is completely beside the point. Generative AI gives you not a single reason to think that our universe is simulated, and that you are the only conscious entity in it. The idea, as mentioned, is daft.

But of course you think all these slaughtered animals are simulated p zombies so what is the problem?

Or is it that you HOPE the slaughtered animals are p zombies and don’t actually suffer?

That is a noble wish.

Wishful thinking, however, is rarely a good guide to reality

If that article is watertight proof that the AI-based simulation I'm talking about is impossible then why did Sabine Hossenfelder (at 6:03) give it a 9/10 on the bullsh*t meter because she thinks it is "logically wrong"?

That video with Trump shows that images and sounds can seem to come from what seems to be a real human (ignoring his female body). It's not perfect but is very impressive for an early generative AI. It shows that it is possible that a universe like ours could be simulated - at least the audio and visuals. Generative AI shows that the beings inside it (like Sora 2) aren't conscious.

Even if the animals were genuinely conscious that is irrelevant when they're being skinned and gutted - assuming they were dead at the time. I even have problems gutting a dead fish (which I haven't done) - not because it was suffering but because I find it disgusting. Note I don't find the slaughtering part quite as bad as the rest.

OK. Putting aside the fact that we have a purported mathematical claim that the universe CANNOT be simulated, I am struggling to understand why you seen to think not just that our universe is in fact simulatied, but that you are the only conscious being in it.

Can you please lay out your reasoning for solipsism?

If it is such a reasonable claim, why did Sabine Hossenfelder, a popular YouTuber with 1.74 million subscribers, give it a 9/10 on the bullsh*t meter? Perhaps the article isn't as watertight as you're claiming. Yet you like to keep repeating it as if it made an unrefutable point.

Imagine this AI that can see you and respond in real time in a way that seems like a human:

Then imagine you could also see the "person" that you were talking to, like that Trump video, but in real time.
And it could be VR so that you can look around as you interact with the character with your voice.
The problem is just making the visuals and sounds connect directly with your brain - as well as physical sensations. But computers have only been around several decades and Elon Musk says it could happen in less than 10,000 years which I think is reasonable. There are also a lot of movies and Black Mirror episodes that assume that kind of thing is possible.
It is easier to just have the one player in the simulation. I don't see the point in simulating other consciousnesses - it would be a lot more expensive and creates additional genuine suffering - assuming that genuine consciousness can be simulated.

I don’t care what Sabine Hossenfelder thinks — or anyone else, for that matter.
So you're a better judge of how good that article is than a woman with a PhD in physics who has written 80 research papers... but you do seem to care what the people in that article say - like you did again in post #706.
Can you respond to this post?
I did in post #707. I responded to you saying "CANNOT". I began to explain the steps towards a simulation that might look like our own experiences. I talked about beings without genuine consciousness which is addressing solipsism.

I don't understand the "but" - you don't believe it is possible to simulate consciousness anyway.
