Here is how Donald Trump's fortune fared over the past five decades:

1) 1970s: Donald inherits father Fred Trump's real estate empire in Brooklyn, which Fred continued to run behind the scenes.

2) 1980s: Donald gets terrific press reviews for being the face of Fred Trump's real estate empire. Develops plans to get into gambling business.

3) 1990s: Trump opens too many casinos and amasses huge debt. Six rapid-fire bankruptcies. Begins to take Russian Laundromat money from Deutsche Bank.

4) 2000s: Trump kept afloat on Russian Laundromat. Lots of trips to Russia.

5) 2010s: Trump wins presidency with Russian help (via Paul Manafort). Begins ripping off US government.

It will have to wait, because Trump has successfully used the courts to delay the release. However, he won't be able to hold that off forever. The New York grand jury will get first crack at those records, but I think that they will ultimately become part of the public record. Trump doesn't want them to become public, because it will become clear that he has violated the law in disclosures to financial institutions and the government. He inflated the worth of his properties to lenders and deflated their worth to tax assessors. His father did the same thing and got away with it, but he invited the public spotlight that he is now caught in. That's why he is so terrified of losing the election. If he loses the power, then he can't stop the legal system from starting to take him apart. Even if he stays in office, he will be in deep trouble because of criminal investigations at the state level. He has turned the DoJ into his personal legal defense team, as far as federal law is concerned. He can't do much about New York except hope that the Supreme Court will come to his aid.

Yes but Copernicus refers to a state investigation.

That's right. Barr has effectively seized control of all federal criminal investigations of him and his cronies. The feds are now being directed to go after his political enemies. What he can't do so far is to stop the active investigation against him by the state of New York, which believes that he and his siblings violated their tax obligations on both real estate and inheritance. They underestimated the value of Fred Trump's estate by something like an order of magnitude, when they paid estate taxes. They've cheated the federal government out of more, but that investigation seems to have been stymied at least until Trump is out of power.
