Journalists are like flashlights. They illuminate a small area of great interest or speculation with gathered hearsay and some checking past history from blotters, records, and the like. Reportage would be better if reporters were held to public distribution of resources and data gathered like scientists, even in behavior and social sciences, are required to provide now.
Amazing how a little fudging changes rules for publication of things formerly presumed sacrosanct, from my lab to yours. Take vetting. Now failure to vet even a minor player in a story poisons the whole story. But, hey, that failure flags to reader other failures might exist in story. OTOH a tweet, if it contains an eye catch word or phrase, is propagated far and wide.
