This is just sickening

female idol was in critical condition after being viciously stabbed during an event for apparently refusing a gift from a reported fan in Koganei, western Tokyo, police said Sunday.

Mayu Tomita, 20, has yet to regain consciousness after being stabbed nearly two dozen times in the neck and chest on Saturday.

Tomohiro Iwazaki, 27, was arrested after witnesses said he attacked Tomita with a knife during an event at around 5 p.m. Saturday. The suspect admitted attacking her, the police said.

Tomita may have been a victim of stalking. The Metropolitan Police Department said the idol told them earlier this month that a man named Iwazaki had been persistently sending her messages via her blog and Twitter account.

According to sources, a person believed to be Iwazaki sent multiple messages to Tomita’s Twitter account. In those messages, the person claimed to have sent a watch to her sometime between January and February. It was apparently returned to the sender in April.

“I will never forget that I was looked down upon by you,” a message sent on Feb. 22 read.

“It’d would be radical to kill just because (someone was) rejected by a girl,” read another message dated March 15.

In May 2014, two members of the popular idol group AKB48 were attacked by a 24-year-old man brandishing a saw. The two were injured and the idol group cancelled its fan meet-and-greet events, where participants buying CDs and tickets can meet and shake hands with AKB48 members.

The suspect, Satoru Umeda, pleaded guilty to the charges in November 2014 and was eventually given a sentence of six years in prison. The ruling was finalized in February 2015.

I think that this guy should have been arrested and sent for mental evaluation for the message sent on March 15.

Found this and many more like it: Anti-stalking laws ‘are a dead end’ by Jake Adelstein Japan Times May 31, 2014: "Japan’s lifeless stalking laws and their lack of enforcement by police will result in another woman being savagely assaulted or killed after appealing for help to the boys in blue.” A detective with the Kanagawa Police Department told me. “The stalking laws are a dead end. The law requires we warn the perp first. They know this and they make themselves hard to find." Initial investigations are slow and it takes a significant amount of time for police to issue a warning. Statistically, the numbers are abysmal. In the 21,089 stalking complaints filed last year, only 2,452 warnings and 34 cease-and-desist orders were issued.

Tougher laws enforced immediately please.

Same with the Rebecca Schaefer murder, this celebrity incident (not to mention that both were young and pretty and would stir parental instinct) is getting lawmakers moving at turbo speed to make up for shitty laws:

TOKYO – The ruling bloc announced on Friday plans to strengthen stalker laws after idol star Mayu Tomita was stabbed some 30 times by a male fan on May 14.

The Liberal Democratic Party and ruling coalition partner Komeito announced plans to establish a panel that will look into amending the Stalker Control Act to make obsessive messages on social media subject to regulation, the Asahi Shimbun reported on Friday (May 28).

Komeito has already drafted a summary of proposals and plans to consult with opposition parties to make amendments during the extraordinary Diet session this coming fall.

The Stalker Control Law currently considers repeated phone calls and e-mails as obsessive behavior. The planned panel will aim to expand coverage of the law to include social media messages like tweets and blog comments and enact harsher penalties.

The panel will also set out to allow the Public Safety Commission in each prefecture to enforce restraining orders without requiring police to send warnings to perpetrators.

Yoshihisa Inoue, secretary general of Komeito, told reporters on Friday, “As a lawmaker-sponsored bill, we hope [the law can be expanded] as soon as possible.”

So the guy got 14 1/2 years.

Apparently it is a long sentence compared to normal.

Mayu Tomita is dreading the day that will arrive 14 years and six months from now. That is when her stalker, who repeatedly stabbed the college student singer over a perceived snub, will be released from prison.

“I can only feel anxiety and fear knowing that the suspect will be walking the streets after just 14 years,” Tomita, 21, said in a statement released through her lawyers.

The Tachikawa Branch of the Tokyo District Court on Feb. 28 convicted Tomohiro Iwazaki, 28, of attempting to murder Tomita and sentenced him to 14-and-a-half years in prison.

The victim, who was gravely wounded in the attack that occurred in a Tokyo suburb in May last year, is dissatisfied with the sentence. The suspect’s erratic behavior in the court, including yelling at his victim, has exacerbated her fears.

Tomita was in a separate room at the court house when the verdict was announced. Upon hearing the sentence, she said, “I thought even the 17 years (demanded by prosecutors) wasn’t long enough,” and then she fell silent, the lawyers said.

According to the investigation, Iwazaki, an unemployed resident from Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture, became infatuated with the singer after seeing her perform. He started attending her shows, tried chatting with her online and gave her gifts.

After she returned the gifts, an angry Iwazaki harassed and menaced the student online so much that she consulted police about him in May last year.

On May 21, Iwazaki attacked Tomita in Koganei in western Tokyo, just outside a concert venue where she was scheduled to perform that evening.

According to the sentence, he attempted to murder the victim by repeatedly stabbing her in the neck and other parts of her body using a folding knife.

The assault paralyzed Tomita’s tongue and other body parts and caused her to develop post-traumatic stress disorder.

The defense argued that the attack was an impulsive act and not premeditated.

But the judge rejected this argument by noting that Iwazaki bought the weapon after learning of Tomita’s performance schedule.

“He intended to murder the victim if she was unwilling to talk to him,” the judge said. “He stabbed the victim’s neck and chest multiple times, clearly showing he had the intent to kill.”

The judge also rejected as illogical and untrustworthy Izawaki’s claim that he was carrying the knife simply as a “spiritual talisman.”

“His actions were dangerous as well as malicious, and the impact on the victim was severe,” the judge said in handing down the sentence.

I have read a few news articles about her condition and the physical problems she has from this, not listed in this one are massive. I don't want to list them all, too sad.

Fame is that situation in which people you have never met want to kill you.

she was barely famous, in some low budget "Idol" (japanese meaning) shows, singing and dancing stuff. It said that after her being in the group she did her own solo stuff.

This is her with the idol group Secret Girls as the character "Eye". She is up front at 15 seconds in. The guys watching the live show are "wota" and they have set lines and chants to do for many songs of many groups.

Seems like a perverse sublimation for the fans. Kind of creepy.
