Florida Students And facualty Must Register Political Views With State

The good thing about living in a state full of nutjobs and beaches is you don't notice the difference as the country declines into chaos.

Now y'all have self-collapsing apartment buildings too.
I get the feeling that you're a panhandler, looking down your nose at "South Floridians" for not being part of the "real South". :D

I'm in central Florida but allow me to dispel a myth. The "real south" as I like to put it in Florida exists in pockets where the communities have been there for generations but overall the further north the more southern things get in the state of Florida.

More shoes dropping

...
Florida state colleges and universities that show signs of “indoctrination” may be defunded, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said on Tuesday, as he and others on the right crusade against what conservatives have decided to call “Critical Race Theory.”
DeSantis said that he was trying to stop the state’s colleges and universities from becoming “hotbeds for stale ideology.”

“That’s not worth tax dollars, and that’s not something that we’re going to be supporting going forward,” he added at a press conference held at a middle school in Fort Myers, Florida.
...

“We do not want a curriculum that is judging students based on their race,” DeSantis said, adding that he had also banned the “1619 Project,” apparently referring to a 2019 New York Times magazine issue which positioned the history of slavery and experience of African-Americans as central to the country’s history.
...

Orwellian memory hole coming right up, courtesy of DeSantis and the GOP.
Of course this is idiotic. But if it comes to pass, all a state university has to do is shift its funding from football and other major sports to academics.

You can't ask people if they are vaccinated but you can survey them on their politics? WTF?!

...

The state will require taxpayer-funded colleges and universities to issue surveys to determine "the extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented" on campus and whether students, faculty and staff "feel free to express [their] beliefs and viewpoints," although it's not clear what will be done with the poll results, reported the Tampa Bay Times.
...
"...a pair of state legislators complained that Florida colleges and universities had become "socialism factories."

WTF?

WTF for the article writer.

The headline says they are required to register. The article only says the schools need to survey. Big difference.

Typically, yes, but is the survey truly private? A survey you take where the govt tracks you is a de facto registration. That said, my usual modus operandus for Raw Story articles is to look for corroborating sources.

Having to do the survey != requiring people to answer the survey.

Now, if they won't accept "none of your fucking business" as an answer to the survey then there's a problem.

They spend years telling people that Universities will brainwash their kids into becoming liberals, convincing who knows how many people to either skip higher education or go to a crappy 'christian' college. They do this survey, and guess what, conservatives will be a minority, and have been conditioned to view any disagreement or criticism of their views as oppression. They will claim the survey 'proves' how conservative views are discriminated against, just like how Ben Stein showed the education system suppresses the scientific evidence for creationism.

Yeah, I think this is the intent.

It is now a question of further developments. For example, Florida colleges and Universities having difficulties in recruiting qualified professors and educators. Loss of votes for GOP as educators, professors and teachers utterly abandon the GOP and declare war on the GOP. Possible loss of accreditation of Florida colleges and Universities. Ugly student reactions to right wing educators who attempt to use these laws to oust liberal colleagues on flimsy grounds. Radicalized students who are suddenly woke with a bang to GOP fascism. And lawsuits, lawsuits, lawsuits. If you were a company looking for a place to set up business, this is not going to be a positive draw setting up shop in a right winged shit hole state like Florida.

It is an old Texas ranchers bit of wisdom, better to avoid carelessly stepping in a cow flop than having to clean your boots. DeSantis and his GOP buddies are in this up to their knees and won't be smart enough to abandon this cretinous policy. In the end, the damage to the state of Florida's higher education system is going to be immense.

Years of entertainment to come. And with an important off year election coming up.

Sure, but in the panhandle, you can find a fundamentalist church almost next door to a shop that sells porn and drug paraphernalia. Where else can you find such diversity? ;)

Also run by the church?

But it is clear their intent is to damage Florida's higher education system.

In 2020, Biden's victory largely came in swings states when college educated suburbanites abandoned the wretched GOP and Trump. Making enemies of the entire higher education system and their alumni would seem to be a bad idea. But, hey, GOP. When the Florida colleges and Universities start waggling their state mandated surveys in students faces questioning their political beliefs, there is going to be a reaction. It ain't going to be pretty. Even the most dull witted college party boy or girl will soon be aware of GOP over reach.
Students of the world unite. You have nothing left to lose but your chains.

It's the Republican way. A large part of their base is noncollege educated. Non college educated tend to vote Republican. More college educated tend to vote Democrat. Destroy education and you make more Republicans.
