For the first time in history, there are more registered independents in the United States than there are registered Republicans.

It may not be for the reason you think, though.

New data from Ballot Access News, which tracks registrations in the 31 states that require voters to register by party, shows that independents account for 29.09 percent of voters in them, compared with 28.87 percent for Republicans. As recently as 2004, Republicans outpaced independents by nearly 10 percentage points.

There are still way more registered Democrats; 39.66 percent of voters are registered with that party.

The problem is that it's a lot easier to get stupid people to act in unison than it is to get smart people to act in unison.

Yea, that's good news. However the problem is that the republicans are now targeting independents. The dems are mostly targeting dems and the mythical "younger voters" who never vote.

Report in today's UK Guardian that Republicans have closed 700+ polling stations in Texas since 2012, mostly in minority/poor districts. And of course we have Kemp in Georgia proudly erasing half a million from the voter rolls and very pleased about it too, and my home state Florida defying the will of voters and finding ways to keep ex-felons from voting.

You'd think this kind of thing would reach a tipping point and a national outcry, over what is essentially creeping disenfranchisement and the reversal of rights hard won during the 60s. But no, they keep rolling on and on. The more the demographic odds stack against them, the more they gerrymander and purge. I think we are on the path to one big giant minority/urban amoebic blob of a district in every red state by about 2050, and a single polling station in each.

This is like pointing out that there are more cars now than horses.... duh.
The point of registering to aparty is to vote in their primary elections. that is the only purpose (for the registrant). since the GoP doesn't do primaries, but instead simply informs the party who they shall obey unquestionably, it is pointless to do so. Might as well register as a Democrat to have access to vote for the person you want the Republican to run against.

in other news, people are gravitating away from Betamax.
