Generic comic book thread

Brian Michael Bendis left Marvel for DC.

On the one hand, this is a big loss for Marvel. On the other hand, major writers and artists going back and forth between Marvel and DC is the oldest story in American comic books. It's hard to name important creators who didn't (other than Stan Lee).

*Ahem*

Stan Lee actually did an entire series with DC, Just Imagine, in which he re-imagined all of the iconic DC super heroes.

I stand corrected.

On the origin of the name Black Panther:

It turns out there was an organization called the "Black Panther Party" from the East coast that inspired both the organization we know from California and the comic book character.

Sergio Aragon[ent]eacute[/ent]s has long been a guilty pleasure of mine.

Like many my age, I first enjoyed his work in Mad magazine as a child, then discovered his Groo comic book later.

I always marveled at his ability to tell stories without an ounce of text and always assumed that was the result of a language barrier somewhere somewhen somehow, but it turns out there's a much more logical explanation for this peculiar ability of his: he studied pantomime at a university:

Wikipedia said:
He made his first professional sale in 1954 when a high school classmate submitted his work to a magazine without telling Aragonés. He continued to sell gag cartoons to magazines while studying architecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he learned pantomime under the direction of Alejandro Jodorowsky. "I joined the class", Aragonés recalled, "not to become a mime but to apply its physical aspects of movement to my comics." In 1962, Aragonés moved to the United States.

So I signed up for the free trial of DC Universe this week and I'm likely going to sub for at least the first month to watch a bunch of things I've never seen but heard good stuff about, like Young Justice. It was worth it just because I got to watch Death of Superman without buying it so that alone paid for the first month. I'll also get to watch the new Titans when it premiers so that's a plus as well.

Not quite as stoked on the comics front of it, there's just not a wide enough selection and I'm worried because they are saying more will be available in October for purchase. I don't want to buy comics, I just want to pay a monthly fee to read whatever strikes my fancy that particular day. I have been enjoying it so far though, re-reading Identity Crisis and the origin issues of Computo.

In other comic news I just learned about ComicGate last night and am just disgusted that these pathetic losers are infesting every goddamn thing I've ever enjoyed it seems. I get it, they don't like women and minorities and anyone not a straight, white male ... so just kindly fuck off to conserva-land and make your own comic company with whatever Aryan perfection you wish and see how well it does. DC and Marvel have always been diverse and supportive of people who are different (fuck, the X-Men are practically the poster children for the concept) and if you didn't pick up on that during your comics reading then I don't think you were paying any attention to the stories at all.

I never liked Dazzler, but I also never heard the story behind her creation beyond the vaguest details.

https://twitter.com/the_moviebob/status/1044802514212859906

Scenario: Imagine if Marvel or DC partnered with a record company to create a studio pop-singer whose stage persona would have "powers" and star in an in-universe comic; with the eventual plan being to heavily promote her as a new A-list hero in advance of a movie...
1/4
...which would star this character, versus two other pop-stars (one of them Cher!) as villains and the two trendiest bands of the moment as their minions, alongside the most popular superheroess from that publisher's comics universe...
2/4
...who would need to be rescued by the new singer heroine, establishing her as - canonically - among the most powerful figures in the official continuity.

Oh, this would also be the FIRST time all but one of these heroes had appeared in live-action, ever, and a musical.
3/4
Think that would go over well today? Sound like some ridiculousness Disney would attempt with one of their assembly-line pop-idols?

It's actually how/why "Dazzler" exists in the X-MEN comics. And it came *this close* to being the first Marvel movie ever.
4/4
"DAZZLER" was conceived by Jim Shooter with this movie pitch in mind as part of the "comic based on fake/real pop star" scheme, originally as "The Disco Dazzler." Plot would've involved a battle between evil queens played by Cher and Donna Summer in a post-nuke future NY...
...with members of KISS and The Village People as their respective henchmen (with powers based on their stage personas/costumes). Rodney Dangerfield was sought for the eventual "big bad," Robin Williams for Dazzler's love interest. The Avengers and Spider-Man would be "her team."
Incredibly, this didn't fail to happen because it was a terrible idea - it failed (in part) because they decided to make Dazzler white.

Really.

Shooter had based his early sketches for her on Grace Jones (in case the rest of this didnt clue you in: THIS WAS THE LATE-70s)...
...but by the time deals were getting made (the "real" Jones was never seriously considered) the target actress was newly-minted "it girl" Bo Derek. Those familiar with 70s Hollywood lore in general can guess what happened next...
...Bo Derek basically wouldn't appear in movies at the time unless you let her husband John - an untalented drama-queen hack - direct them. Being impossible to work with, he scuttled both of their careers and dozens of projects. DAZZLER was one of them.

That story sounds, uh, kind of insane. Too bad they had to get an inferior white actress to play the part. It could have been pretty hilarious/epic with Grace Jones.

I agree completely.

I should have lost patience much sooner than this, but it was getting James Gunn fired that really torqued my 'nards.

Why the fuck do fascists even watch Star Wars or Star Trek or read Marvel or DC? Seriously. Why?

In Star Wars, the bad guys are space Nazis. It should be obvious that Star Wars was never meant to appeal to their ilk.

Star Trek has always been about promoting diversity from day one, and they broke a lot of barriers long before anyone else in popular media. Again, it should have been obvious that Star Trek was never intended to appeal to white supremacists, but still the white supremacists bitch and whine about Star Trek.

It should have been obvious that Marvel comics was never meant to appeal to white supremacists. For fuck's sake, Marvel comics introduced Afro-futurism to white audiences in the 1960s long before the term Afro-futurism was even coined. The first black female superhero came maybe a decade after that. Star Trek may have been first to show a woman of African descent in a position of military leadership, but Marvel did it much, much better two decades later in the pages of the X-Men comics. Any white supremacist who reads Marvel comics has to be stupid.

They don't belong in the nerd world. They don't belong in nerd culture.

Can't they just stay home and watch old copies of the original Birth of a Nation or old Nazi propaganda films or something? But no, I have to listen to endless whining about "political correctness" this and "social justice warriors" that while actresses of color have to delete their Instagram accounts because of the massive amounts of abuse they get because they made the mistake of starring in a Star Wars movie or a Ghostbusters movie.

Fuck
those
assholes.

With a rusty crowbar.

Seriously, I'm just getting tired of this shit.
