A man carrying a rifle inside the Atlanta airport wasn’t breaking any laws, but he did raise a few eyebrows, including those of some Atlanta police officers. Jim Cooley says he carried his gun through the terminal when he and his wife went to drop his daughter off for her flight. He says he knew he wasn’t breaking any rules because he has a full understanding of Georgia’s gun laws. “You can carry in unsecured areas of the airport. Past TSA, never,” Cooley said.

That’s exactly what he did. Cooley carried his AR-15 fully loaded with a 100-round drum through parts of the terminal.

Well I bet everyone felt safer because of him, and those that didn't should just go to North Korea or Uzbekibekistan.

Since he was a possible threat to shoot someone sometime, why wasn't he killed by the police?

The scarier thing would be if his masturatory fantasies came true and there was actually a terrorist attack while he was there. Firing into a crowded area with a machine gun is the worst way possible to try and get one or a few guys.

Lest we forget:

To live free, to live with rights to do the things we want without causing harm to others, we can't let everything frighten us, nor can we let those entrusted with our safety have unaccountable power to harm us or that which is ours in the name of protecting us. The moment we accept the curtailment of liberty and the immunity of police authority out of fear and cowardice, is the moment we are no longer free.

First of all, he's white. Second of all, that's pretty much it. He did not look middle eastern, or any of the other suspect colorations, so according to state law, he is allowed to get the best possible shooting position for maximum civilian casualties.
This news article will provide valuable information to anyone seeking to exploit the weakness in the security of the Atlanta airport.

On the other hand, had there been a terrorist attack at the moment he appeared in the terminal, at least one man was prepared to deal with the crisis, provided there were not 101 terrorists.

What a fool. That law better get changed quick.
While I understand how past TSA checkpoint is more secured, I had no idea that the check-in location is "unsecured". You can't park your car in front of the terminal, but you can carry a gun like that in the open?

Nothing can go wrong when paranoid people carry weapons into crowded areas.

I got yelled at in 1997 for dropping a toenail clipper at a security guard's foot.
And this was in the parking lot, there to pick someone up, not board a plane.

I wish the 2nd amendment had mentioned a well-regulated pedicure.

Was that the stated purpose of the display? to keep the police in check? was that his worry?

Did you mean to point out that people who really wanted to shoot up an airport wouldn't just walk around with their gun out in the open?

And ask if anyone had any evidence that people open carrying 100 round rifles had ever led to any problems?

The legislature wrote and passed a specific law that made this legal as well as allowed loaded weapons in hospitals, churches, schools and bars, all places that the previous concealed carry law exempted from the protection of armed, untrained citizens.

It goes a long way to proving my hypothesis that left on their own conservatives will always be wrong. They will always chose the wrong option. This is why conservatives are congenitally unqualified to govern.

It's neither illegal nor wrong, and it's (grasp this) not harmful, so it's upon us to ridicule those that find such actions unacceptable.

The "because I can" explanation has always been the banner of the douchebag.

What is amazing is that he is the first idiot to do this. The law has been in effect since 1 July 2014.

The law also says that you can't be arrested if you are caught trying to sneak a gun into the protected areas beyond the security screening if it is reasonable to assume that you just forgot were packing heat. They have to give you the chance to put your gun into your car.

The FBI assured us that they would still arrest you carrying a gun into a secure area on Federal charges even if you swear that you forgot that you were carrying a loaded gun.

Yup, outside the security cordon is like any other public space, normal weapon carry laws apply unless specifically excluded.
