Has anyone ever had this issue personally, or had to encourage a friend to really listen to music that they first thought was corny or old fashioned?
Some of it has to do with old instruments (moogs) , or with an era that had other social aspects that seems embarrassing now.
One odd example for me is that I got into listening to Japanese Enka music from some of the songs of Meiko Kaji who had an old song in the Kill Bill soundtrack. To me all this music is fresh, but to Japanese people it is old fashioned and some reflexively won't listen to it.
