Newt Gingrich, the former U.S. House Speaker and presidential candidate, warned that "atheist philosophy" might pose an ever bigger threat to Christianity than radical Islamic terror groups.

Gingrich was speaking on Saturday in North Naples, Florida, when he told about 300 people at The Ritz-Carlton hotel that "the rise of a secular, atheist philosophy" in the West is "an equally or even more dangerous threat" to Christianity than radicals who kill believers, Naples Daily News reported.
...
Gingrich said that he does not believe the religious and the secularists can ever come together, arguing that eventually, "one side will win; one side will lose."

"Either the radical secularists will succeed in controlling the government and driving religion out of American life, or the people who believe in faith will succeed in controlling government and insist that you cannot impose radical values on American people," he stated.

I wonder if we can get the witch from Monty Python and the Holy Grail to turn that asshole into a newt.

Oh. Wait.

Well, he’s right. Islamic terrorism is not any kind of threat to Christianity and the rise of secularism in the West definitely is one. Whole his word choice to phrase it that atheists are worse than terrorists was deliberate and scummy, the underlying argument is a sound one.

And that huge audience of 300 people...wow!

But it's nice to know that atheism gets noticed.

Hey Newty, what would you do without bogeymen?

It's nice to know we have that kind of power.

Usually we're told we've marginalized ourselves because we have nothing to offer...

'Atheist philosophy more dangerous than Islamic terrorists'... to Christianity

Key part of the phrase. Of course atheism poses a threat to Christianity. The real problem here is Christians thinking atheism represents ideological warfare, and not just more civil debate about the world.

When Newt first entered Georgia politics, he was surprisingly liberal. I recall him making an argument for de-criminalizing marijuana, back in the seventies. I wonder where he stands on that issue now?

I wonder how his argument would be received if he put it 'science and rational naturalism is a bigger threat to Christianity than radical Islam.' Which is, of course, what he should really be worried about. As Martin Luther concisely expressed it, "Reason is the enemy of faith."

He should have clarified that the threat is not to Christianty itself but rather a threat to the influence of Christianity in the public square (politics).

Relax Newt, politicians like you don't need to prop up the Church and Christianity can survive/thrive irrespective of the sort of people who dominate man-made government.

Newt just likes people to hate and fear each other. He's just that type of asshole. I doubt that Newt even believes the Christian nonsense he spouts. He just knows it can be used as a way to divide people and stir up shit. People like Newt don't want people to tolerate each other or work together, when hate works so much better in the political arena. Who but the most gullible brain dead sycophants take this man seriously anymore?

I was trying to think of which “radical values” he thinks secularists have a shot at successfully imposing upon Americans? Things like gay rights are accepted by many liberal and moderate theists, as are scientifically based ideas such as evolution.
In other words, I don’t know if he is actually afraid of ideas being imposed on Christians, or if it’s a fear of Christians voluntarily coming around to more secular values?

Heh! True, dat.

From the article:
Gingrich, who is a Catholic, warned that secular philosophy that has spread through Hollywood, the media, and universities represents a "repudiation of everything we've learned about the importance of the spiritual world."

He added that centers of faith must defend religion against such atheistic philosophy, noting that the divide between religious and secular people is a threat to America.

"They are so fundamentally different about the very nature of life," he said about the two worldviews.

"If you believe that your rights come from God, you have a very limited sense of government," he said.

"And if you believe that's all baloney and your rights come from lawyers and politicians, then you have a different view."

Coming from a politician, that has a seriously false note...
