How about Jim Thorpe for consideration. While he didn't play golf, he won his Olympic medals while wearing street shoes - and old ones at that - because he couldn't afford real athletic gear. At least, that's what I recall from an article I read about him when I was a child

I did too, but when I looked at the stats Nada indeed is much better head to head, any court. Federer is awesome though.

It looks like it's hard to give a strong edge to either. They're both different players, with different strengths. But the commentary at the bottom does seem to give an edge to Federer.

I scrolled up to see what these two fellows looked like and laughed heartily, thinking there might be a different kind of competition between them.

Then I noticed that those were tennis balls in their pockets. Ahem...*gulp*.
