Grammar, Spelling and Usage Peeves

Here's an example of questionable phrasing:
Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain is recovering from cancer treatment in his home state and, as someone who himself was tortured while he was a prisoner of war, is among the most passionate advocates against torture in Congress.

I don't know, maybe more torture in Congress is something we should consider...

Edit:

Burr said "some may seek to turn this nomination into a trial about a long shuddered program," however the hearing should be about Haspel, not those programs.

*sigh* Really, CNN? "Shuddered" is what you think was said here?

Another instance of a word that people can embarrass themselves with (if they knew enough to be embarrassed) is sanguine. I read part (not much) of a book in which two guys were ambushed by swordsmen. They had to hack their attackers apart, getting blood all over themselves in the process.

Then the hero turned to his friend and said, "I'm not sanguine about this."

It wasn't intended to be funny.

That _has_ to have been deliberate. I insist on believing that. It’s so awkwardly used that it has to be a pun!
