Hey Bilby I thought Australia had gun control?

This was a tragic event and I don't think it's necessary to criticize anyone for saying that Australia doesn't have guns. Afaik, it's not legal for a citizen to own guns in Australia, but that doesn't mean that some hateful people won't own guns illegally. What is very disturbing is that antisemitism is on the rise in Australia along with many other countries. I don't understand hatred, especially when it's directed at any particular group of people, regardless if it's based on race, ethnicity, ideology or religious beliefs.

Why not simply sympathize with the victims of this horrible act, or compare it to the horrible mass shooting that happened yesterday at Brown University. Mass shootings are almost a weekly occurrence in the gun crazy US, often directed at certain groups. Humans are the worst animals on the planet, imo. Whenever Steven Colbert does his little questionaire game, when he asks what is the scariest animal, I always think the answer should be humans.

In Israel, senior officials expressed solidarity with Australian Jewry, condemning the attack and warning of the growing global threat of antisemitic violence. Messages of support and prayers for the victims have poured in from Jewish communities around the world.

President Isaac Herzog condemns the “cruel” shooting attack on a group of Jews at Sydney’s Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration event, calling on Canberra to fight against “the enormous wave of antisemitism” that he says “is plaguing Australian society.”

“Our sisters and brothers in Sydney, Australia, have been attacked by vile terrorists in a very cruel attack on Jews who went to light the first candle of Hanukkah,” Herzog says, speaking at an event at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem.

“We repeat our alerts time and again to the Australian government to seek action and fight against the enormous wave of antisemitism which is plaguing Australian society,” he adds.

We grow up, being provided the misleading idea that we are more civilized that we were. But this stuff is the unfortunate reminder that no, we aren't.
Looks like theres been some shootings in Australia. Where did they get their guns?
They do have gun control, this shit isn't common. It isn't even uncommon enough to call "uncommon", it is extremely rare.

I forgot to point out RVonse believes *a* shooting in Bondi equals *some* shootings. Is this MAGA cult maths?

No, it's atypical grammar. His usage was a mass shooting is comprised of individual shootings, which is not how we ordinarily describe mass shootings.

I am currently only seeing this on social media so I am not 100% it is reliable, but one post is a video from a tv news source (allegedly) and the other is a social media post by a news network. Unless, it's been deepfaked or some other incident, it seems like it is real to me. I'll put it here and check veracity more later on as well.

Since 7pm last night I have been inundated by stupid yank cunts on other forums who are too fucking stupid to understand gun control does not equal complete and utter gun ban.

It may be best to treat comments by US Republicans as comedic entertainment.

Let me apologize on behalf of a fellow American. I can't be sure about Mr. Vonse, but many Republicans believe that the Second Commandment -- the right to own and operate guns -- is a basic human right that applies to all the countries on all the continents. He may have been congratulating Australians for overcoming the fascist laws denying them their god-given right.

You also need to understand that Republicans have no sense of perspective. The United States experienced 46,728 total gun deaths in 2023, so a single gun death in Australia might pass unnoticed if a sharp-eyed right-winger didn't point it out. Same-same? 46,728 and 1 are just numbers.

We see similar lack of perspective in other topics at IIDB. A thread laments the large number of sexual predators affiliated with Trump and the GOP, and one Infidel has to pipe in with a story of a dogcatcher in Oshkosh, elected with the "(D)" label, who's a sex offender. Another Republican here spends a half-hour on the freeway driving over the hills on many days to a beach, posting here whenever the beach weather seems cool. He thinks this is somehow a refutation of global warming.

I'm sure Mr. Vonse meant to valedict his post with something reflecting American values, perhaps "Our thoughts and prayers. God bless all y'all."

I was just going to post that video. Seems to be real. TMZ has it (so that means its true. :) )

Video Shows Man Calmly Taking Gun From Shooter

Kinda surprised the shooter sorta saunters off afterwards and no one seems to stop him.

We could use more men like that in this country.
Our country is full of people like that. The trouble is, taking down an armed man sometimes requires a bit of luck and circumstance.

A Jewish festival has been attacked in Bondi Beach Australia, 11 dead and many injured. I don’t think there can be much of a leap to guess the motives and creed of the two gunmen.

I presume that's a question that the Police and ASIO will be trying to answer once they have collected evidence and interviewed the surviving gunman.

It's not just a matter of walking into a gun shop; Since the 1996 Port Arthur shootings, guns are far harder to obtain here.

But gun control has never worked by making guns impossible to get; That wouldn't be achievable in any society.

I posted this in 2019:
Obtaining a firearm, either by buying one illegally, or making one in a home workshop, is easy and cheap anywhere in the developed world.

The difference between the USA and (for example) the UK is not in the ease of obtaining a gun; It is in the consequences of being caught with one.

In many parts of the US, merely being seen to have a gun is not grounds for police interest or intervention (as long as your skin color checks out). If the cops do care to investigate your weapon, and find that you are not licensed to have it, or that it's stolen property, the penalties are slight. It's a misdemeanour, and a small fine, and confiscation, are the likely penalties.

Being seen with a gun in the UK - even if you are fully licensed and own the weapon in question - will likely provoke a severe police response. If you haven't broken any laws, you will nevertheless be cautioned about causing 'alarm and despondency' (which is illegal), by allowing the public to see it - and potentially be scared by it.

If the UK police find you in possession of a gun that you do NOT have a licence for, then you can expect to be sent to jail for several years. Just for having the gun - you needn't shoot or threaten anyone with it.

The result of this is that criminals don't habitually carry guns in the UK. It's too risky.

Gun control has bugger all to do with making guns hard to obtain. It's all about making guns undesirable to keep, particularly for criminals.

Very few Americans appear to be capable of understanding this simple fact.
Murder is illegal, yet we still have murder. Would making murder legal help? If people could just kill anyone who looked suspicious to them, with no repurcussions, surely society would be dramatically better. :rolleyesa:

Sure, but why would guessing be laudable, when we could just wait and find out for certain? And what use is it to know after the event? It's not like we didn't know in general terms already that lethal enmity exists between Muslims and Jews.

Yes, this appears to be terrorism. One shooter is dead and one in custody; More will be known once the Police and ASIO have completed their investigation.

That you could find two Australian Muslims who would be prepared to do such a vile thing should surprise nobody; Sadly, that you would then attempt to imply that this is the fault of all Muslims, or that Islam in itself is the sole and sufficient motive, is also both vile and unsurprising.

Your attitude is not a part of the solution, it is a part of the problem.

In a press conference shortly after 10pm, Albanese confirmed the incident was an organised terror attack and an act of anti-Semitism. 'An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian, and every Australian tonight will be like me, devastated by this attack,' he said.
After Albanese addressed the shooting, a journalist questioned how authorities missed opportunities to address a growing levels of extremism in Sydney - especially against Jewish Australians. 'When left unchecked, as you were just saying, anti-Semitism leads to terrorism and violence targeting the innocent,' the journalist said. 'Your government has come under criticism in claiming that it has ineffectively responded to the rise of anti-Semitism in Australia since October 7, 2023.
'In September, your government recognised a Palestinian state. Your ministers have attacked the Israeli government, senior ministers refused to visit the sites of the October 7 massacres, and you created a special Islamophobia envoy alongside an anti-Semitism envoy. 'Have you taken the threat of anti-Semitism seriously? And can you guarantee the safety of Jewish Australians?'

Daily Mail

Australia suffers from the same delusions as Europe

The quotes from the above article are grandstanding. No gov’t can guarantee the safety of any person or group. The implication that creating an Islamophobia envoy as well as an antisemitism envoy is somehow negligent or antisemitic is ridiculous.
