Rudy was Mayor of NY during the height of Trumps fraudulent and illegal business dealings (not only Trump - all NY commercial real estate dealings are totally corrupt - that's NYC for you). Trump never got into any significant legal trouble during that time. Now, Rudy is serving Trump in a pretty unusual way... "interesting", that.
Why would Rudy do this? Maybe he "has" to... else go down with him.

Heh ... Rudy is well along a path that could take him down, with or without Chitgibbon's companionship. He could already be charged with witness tampering/obstruction based on his public comments. If that's his way of insulating himself from something else, that something else must be whole orders of magnitude worse than what he is already exposed to. Or - maybe he's just a fucking idiot like his boss. Personally I don't think so - I believe he is assiduously and systematically "normalizing" types and degrees of criminal misbehavior to the point where once it comes to a head in court, he'll just be shrugging and asking "what's the big deal?" - and a significant fraction of the public will be sympathetic to that.
