How Climate Change Deniers Rise to the Top in Google Searches

Groups that reject established climate science can use the search engine’s advertising business to their advantage, gaming the system to find a mass platform for false or misleading claims.

Type the words “climate change” into Google and you could get an unexpected result: advertisements that call global warming a hoax...

The climate denialist ads are an example of how contrarian groups can use the internet’s largest automated advertising systems to their advantage, gaming the system to find a mass platform for false or misleading claims.

Google allows companies to bid on search terms, and displays paid content at the top of its search results in the same blue font used for unpaid content.

More than half of the 21.7 million public comments submitted to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission about net neutrality this year used temporary or duplicate email addresses and appeared to include false or misleading information, the Pew Research Center said on Wednesday.

I typed “climate change” and got nothing of the sort.

I typed “climate change” into Google and got one paid article calling climate change a hoax, a paid article about climate change denialism, and a third paid article soliciting donations to fight climate change.

I wonder what my results would have been if I'd cleared the cookies from my browser before doing the search.

Hmmm, interesting, it looks like I don't get any ads from google search. I do get google (I presume) ads in general (on other sites) but not during googling.
Oh, OK, I managed to get some "sponsored links" during googling. So I am not completely ignored by google. But I had to search for something which you can buy.

I always just type "Asian Lesbian Porn" into Google. I wasn't aware that it accepted other search terms.

I can just imagine what the retargeted ads look like on your computer

For those who did not actually read the article, your own browsing history and whether you have blocked "trackers" will determine whether you get the climate denial websites when you do the Google search. That's how Google works - it offers up content its algorithms assumes you would be most interested in based on your browsing history.

If you are clearly a tree-hugger through and through (like I am), you won't get much of the climate denial bullshit. If you have your computer security controls locked down, you probably won't get much either.

If you are like most people, however, with little knowledge about climate change or computer security, and are trying to learn some facts about climate change... you will get the fake stuff instead.

And if you are Tom Sawyer, your will get Asian Lesbian's doing it in the snow.
