New York University moves to implement racial segregation in student dorms

On July 20, Washington Square News, the weekly undergraduate student newspaper of NYU, published an article titled “Student-Led Task Force Calls for Black Housing on Campus,” in which they reported on the university’s willingness to help implement residential communities open solely to “Black-identifying students with Black Resident Assistants.” Since then, the university has officially given the project a green light, aiming to have NYU’s first segregated residential floor established by Fall 2021.

Well done, everyone. Champagne all around.

I agree it sounds daft.

On a slightly separate note, the article, which is strongly opposed to it, and to race quotas and identity politics, appears to be very leftist indeed. How does that fit with the trope of the woke left being said to be in favour of such things?

I think that the article is from the World Socialist website shows just how crazy Wokeness has become.

Weird that you think opposing such things is crazy given that you also oppose them.

I think a better answer might have said something about the drawbacks of simplistic caricatures and the need for more nuance. So, imo, thank you for adding the nuance. A hard left group opposing quotas and identity politics. Nice catch.

Or that the website doesn't know what it's talking about.

It doesn't. Shame on anyone for segregating, for whatever reason.

I wonder if Trausti would support a group of students on campus using their own resources to self-segregate privately? If they would approve for example a group of "men" choosing to house themselves together with a "no women" policy? Or a group of white students making an all-white housing arrangement privately? Or of black people choosing privately to make an all black private housing situation? Or of "women" choosing to make a private all-women housing situation?

Granted I won't know even if Trausti didn't just ignore these questions; I have them on block. It goes in to question whether private individuals in their private decision s can be ethically scrutinized and what justification they have for doing so.

Another thing to question is whether segregation is voluntary opt-in. But regardless shame on the university for encouraging that at all by making it an official program. It isn't exactly "segregation" if everyone doing it had to opt in.

So a bunch of right-wing sites are citing a far left-wing site that is citing a school newspaper. Are we jumping ahead of ourselves here?

Oh wait... white wokeness demands immediate and unquestioned fragility!

In what sense?

"A story claiming that NYU is implementing 'racial segregation in its dorms' is false and misleading".

"During the course of the discussion about the application process–which is ongoing–the Housing Office staff made clear that all Exploration Floors must be open to applicants of all races and backgrounds".

(NYU Statement from today).

The petition started by Brenah Johnson on change.org is a bit muddled.

Petition

We, members of the Black student body, demand that NYU implement Black student housing on campus in the vein of themed engagement floors across first-year and upperclassmen residence halls. These floors would serve to celebrate Black culture and build community among Black-identifying students. The conditions to support this proposal include:

Floors completely comprised of Black-identifying students with Black Resident Assistants

The demands are many.

I always wonder if these things are just trolling. Like the girl calling out too many white folks in the safe space or whatever. Or the petition to have Trader Joe's change the name on labels.

I myself would not assume trolling. I would tend to assume the proposers genuinely think a 'safe space' for black students is warranted and a good idea. Now, that might just have some merit, but on the whole I'd say it's counter-productive. It would be surprising if a university actually went along with it.

Or maybe as you say, it's just rattling cages.

But in any case, I think the number that signed the petition is only 4% of the student body, so not a massively popular petition.

For me, the more interesting aspect of this is that a hard left group (the website) is strongly opposed to stuff that is typically attributed, here at least, to the hard left.

It didn't take me long surfing the website to find the view expressed that the cause of a poor white man is greater than that of a non-poor black man. Can't wait until metaphor gets here.

There is definitely some stuff here that many who complain about woke on this forum could agree or sympathise with, at least partly. Which I think adds a new twist.

The difference is that Wokeness focuses on race and other identity where the hard left used to be just about economic issues. The reason Bernie Sanders called open borders a Koch brothers plot.

Ok. Makes sense. That said, that article is from today, so it seems it's not just 'used to be' in some parts of the hard left.

From now on, I'll make a distinction between 'the left' and 'the woke left' specifically. Or is highlighting economic issues and inequalities also woke? Should we call them 'the racially woke left' and 'the economically woke left'? That way, we can get to include the word woke for both, and then they'll both be bad.

Of course you're happy to see anybody coming on board with your race separatist vision.

It's been said before, the result of woke can only be keeping racism alive. The moment non-whites start getting perks from the attempts to fix the racial inequality they'll do things that enshrine it. It's just incentives. It was bound to happen.

You would assume that a uni newspaper would know better than those of us who do not attend.
