I think I am finally getting right wing logic.

We have a voter fraud problem because we have dead people. And dead people are very bad about letting the county board of elections know that they are dead, so BOEs don't take dead folks' names off the voting rolls. This means that in any given election millions of dead people all over this country are still registered to vote. Those dead people's names COULD be used as a way for us the living to run from precinct to precinct voting with these dead people's names. Does this happen? HELL NO! Half the LIVING people of voting age in this country don't vote under their own names, much less anyone else's. BUT IT COULD HAPPEN and therefore we live under the constant terror of voter fraud and we must enact laws that make voting harder to guard against that fraud.

We need to protect our little girls against transgendered people, or people claiming to be trangendered people, seeking to harm little girls in public ladies rooms. You see, a man could claim he is really a woman and thereby enter a ladies room and then molest little girls. Does this happen? HELL NO! I don't believe there is a single documented case anywhere in criminal files of this country of this ever happening. Men do take children into restrooms and molest them, but they don't try to pass themselves off as transgendered to do that. Not to mention, most molestation happens between people who know each other, in private settings and often between family members. BUT IT COULD HAPPEN and therefore we live under the constant terror of transgendered people molesting little girls in public ladies rooms and we must pass laws that deny transgendered people from using gendered identified restrooms to guard against that molestation.

Using that logic, we should soon expect legislation from the GOP that outlaws:

  • Men shaving their faces while holding their heads in lit fireplaces.
  • People driving their cars on the 27th floor of office buildings
  • Airline pilots flying commercial planes upside down for the entire trip and only to airports whose names end in -ly.

Look for these laws soon because all of these things COULD HAPPEN and that alone is enough to enact and enforce laws to keep such terrors at bay.

I suspect it's something simpler. People not voting for their favorite politicians are, in their minds, likely guilty of voter fraud.

You are not thinking like a criminal Athena. The people who would commit voter fraud are not the young people who do not vote. The people who commit voter fraud are more likely connected to the people who are either paid by George Soros or working for George Soros. And they would be operating on a volume basis. Which means those criminals would much prefer to use dead names then those from living people. Because a dead person can not show up and/or expose the fraud.

Just because you are too honest to commit a crime does not mean that laws should not be put in place to prevent bad people from doing harm.

How many documented cases of voter fraud ACTUALLY HAVE HAPPENED?

There have been just four documented cases of voter fraud in the 2016 election

That's the other problem with voter fraud. There really is no way to know if/when it happened. It's like identity fraud only even worse because with identity fraud at least you see a credit card statement showing somebody making purchases you don't remember. With voter fraud, all you have is an election (like the one we just had) where somebody won but nobody can figure out why.

No, see, that's ELECTION fraud: where the final tally of the votes doesn't match the counts of those who actually voted. Signs of this include but are not limited to:

Phantom voters - Candidate A gets 90% of the ballots in a district where only 10% of the voters belong to his party; this can indicate ballots for Candidate B are being recorded for Candidate A

Missing voters - Candidate B loses by a narrow margin in a district/state where an unusually small number of ballots are actually recorded; this can indicate ballots for Candidate B are being "lost" or not being counted

Multiplying voters - Candidate A records more ballots than the district actually has voters; this may indicate that fictional/false ballots are being created for Candidate A

Challenged voters - My favorite tactic of all: Candidate A gets officials to invalidate votes from districts that heavily favor Candidate B, invalidating ballots after they are cast

These are examples of ELECTION FRAUD, in which one political party and/or government sabotages the democratic process by interfering with the vote count.

Voter fraud is what happens when you cast a fraudulent vote; that is, when you vote on someone else's behalf or pretend to be eligible when you're not. In a country where less than 50% of the voters even bother to show up at the polls, the impact of voter fraud cannot be anything but utterly insignificant.

Identity theft is a problem because a person who steals your identity can rack up tens of thousands of dollars in debt in your name, ruin your credit score, use your name and credentials to commit crimes, etc. A person who steals your vote can, at most, invalidate your ballot. If, on the other hand, you're one of the tens of millions of Americans who doesn't even BOTHER to vote, the thief isn't even doing that much.

If somebody did voter fraud, how would you know? By checking the names of people who voted against the names of the dead, yes? So is that done or are they only trying to make it harder for the living to vote?

Also, why is this a partisan issue? Could such fraud not occur in both directions?

Send everyone who voted a copy of their ballot and tell them to report any irregularities.

So is that done or are they only trying to make it harder for the living to vote?
The only countermeasures they've used against so-called voter fraud are stricter voter ID laws, restricting early and absentee votes, and closing polling times and locations in neighborhoods they claim are more likely to commit fraud. The net EFFECT is that it's harder for people to cast votes and easier for officials to invalidate them after they're cast. It's also rather silly since it's far more easier for a person to simply not have a valid ID than it is for a fraudulent voter to forge one.

So it doesn't actually prevent voter fraud and makes election fraud way easier.

Also, why is this a partisan issue?
Because Republicans can't win elections without cheating and democrats can't lose elections unless Republicans help them. So really, it's a bipartisan issue.

Also, why is this a partisan issue? Could such fraud not occur in both directions?

Because it is not really an issue. The solution to the non-issue is pushed by the Republicans because the so-called solution actually stands to prevent certain people from having access to legally vote... and those people tend to vote Democrat.

so this whole voter fraud problem historically has been a Republican claim so as to get rules in place that inhibit some Democrat voters from being able to place their vote.

It could, but only the Democrats are actually evil enough to take the action to do it because they know how out of touch they are with the American people and can't win fair.

As far as dead people voting it's easy to check. If they know that x number of dead people in a district were registered, they simply need to see if any of those dead people actually voted. I'm sure they have done this and I'm sure if it was happening we would have the numbers.

Note, however, that there are cases where you can legitimately have a vote from a dead person. They only need to have been alive on the day they voted, not on election day.
