Has anyone else noticed that the predominantly conservative and libertarian ideology that governs us has taken more than a few hits from reality during the pandemic?

The champions of individuals taking responsibility for themselves to solve society's problems are recommending a lot of collective actions to reduce the impact of the virus.

The opponents of universal health care don't seem to be so adverse to it now.

The very same people who voted against the Keynesian stimulus in the Great Recession, and instead recommended austerity, seem to have embraced Keynesianism now. It is almost as if Say's law, that supply generates its own demand, is suspended.

How do you explain this? Isn't governing from a consistent ideology, which so many here have recommended to us, not appropriate when the shit hits the fan?

Excuse my language.

It starts at the top. Orange Judas is now singing a new tune with the refrain of "we're doing the best job anyone has ever done handling a pandemic because I knew it was a pandemic before the doctors did". So whistling a happy tune and spreading the gospel that COVID-19 is another Democratic hoax intended to do nothing but make Trump look bad, is no longer viable.

I'm sure someone will be along to explain that we don't understand libertarian philosophy.

The end of small government is over

You might like this editorial: Sorry, that title should be then era, not the end. My bad.

To stop the spread of the coronavirus, state and local governments have shut down as much of communal life as possible. People are also social distancing, staying out of public spaces to slow transmission of the disease. But this has destroyed demand for goods and services, putting the United States on the path to a recession that could easily become an outright depression.

Washington is, finally, working toward a response. But even the most ambitious proposals are nowhere near powerful enough to actually stop the coronavirus from destroying the economy. To do that, policymakers have to go beyond stimulus or bailouts for select industries. They have to take responsibility for economic life on a scale not seen since the New Deal.

Nothing has been passed into law yet, but politicians have begun to float ideas and propose legislation. On Friday, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would offer free testing for all Americans as well as sick days and paid emergency leave for a small subset of working people. On Monday, Senator Mitt Romney of Utah called for sending $1,000 to every America, a one-time grant to pump cash into the economy. On Tuesday, Steven Mnuchin, the treasury secretary, called for more than $850 billion in economic stimulus, including $58 billion in airline bailouts, $250 billion in small business loans and $500 billion in payroll tax cuts.

Isn't it so often the case? I was against gay marriage until my son came out. I was against public assistance until my adult daughter was unemployable due to mental health issues. I was against Medicare for All until my wife became seriously ill and I started getting the bills. I was against illegal immigration until they took my friend away, leaving his family to fend for themselves. It's the same old shortsighted scenario played out over and over by people who cannot see beyond their own immediate needs.

Not in our local neighborhood watch FB group. The conservatives are railing against the socialism of handing out checks to the general public. The horrors.

Not likely. They are happy to receive the checks... they are more likely railing against other people that are less human then they are, or otherwise less deserving / less American / less important than they are to be getting money from the government.

And nary a peep from them when Bonespurs handed out $1.5 trillion to corporations.

Because it's been pointed out time and time again that corporations need the money to keep their businesses open so people can keep their jobs. With all the people out of work now, they all aren't just going to start up their own businesses. They NEED the businesses to open again so they can have their jobs back. Now, all the people realize how much they rely on corporations for their paycheck.

Give people free money and they buy booze, cigarettes, and other drugs.

THAT's the difference. How many poor people do you see who always complain about not having money for bills but they always somehow seem to have a pack of cigs, a bottle of booze, and a bag of weed?

You seem to think this money went to the mom and pop business down on the corner.

No, it went to investment banks and Wall st.

And if it didn't you think the American people would be OK with no banks and no Wall Street?

The same people who blamed the banks for lending money to poor people who couldn't pay back the loans are also the same people who say banks should lend to poor black people or else it's discrimination.

None. How many people do you know? Can you at least quote an article where this is a real thing?

No one blames the banks for lending to the poor. This did not cause the financial crisis.

Maybe if these corporations didn’t spend the last Republican windfall they got in the form of tax cuts on buying back their own stock, they’d have the rainy day fund to weather this storm.

Poor people, bills, and booze? None and neither do you. It’s just another shit assumption you make that people who don’t have the intellectual ability or talents to live in anything other than poverty are in their situation due to laziness and a lack of willpower.

Were the banks and Wall Street in danger of collapse when Trump cut taxes? If so, that is news to me.

No one blamed banks for lending money to poor people. The blame is on the people on Wall Street who bundled up those risky mortgages, and sold them as a much less risky form of investment. When those risky mortgages began to default the whole house of cards came down.

Well whadya know! Halfie's a socialist.

I bet you'll find a lot more booze and cocaine on Wall st. than you ever find on poor people.

Huh? There's a difference between socialism and straight-up hypocrisy.

I bet you'll find a lot more booze and cocaine on Wall st. than you ever find on poor people.

Yabut they DESERVE it! They bought that cocaine and aged single malt whiskey with your own money!
