I don't know what reason you think was obvious, but the popular rumor that the US founders didn't trust the will of the people was not a prime motivating factor for the creation of the Electoral college. More founders/framers were in favor of a direct democratic vote than were opposed. Only Elbridge Gerry, Pierce Butler, and Charles Pinckney are on record as being opposed to direct popular vote. The big reason they eventually chose the electoral college was slavery. They needed to give the less populous slaveholding states some extra influence to uphold the Connecticut Compromise in a way that removed the selection of executive from the legislature.Who's sitting in the Oval office today, Killery or the Donald? And don't give me that bullshit about the been foiled by the college vote which was put in place by the Founding Fathers for obvious reason.
Seeing as how slavery is no longer an issue and direct popular vote still removes the selection of executive from the legislature's hands... maybe the farmer's first instinct was best. It is certainly a more intuitively fair proposition from the perspective of a citizen voter.
