Can one smoke hemp fabric and get high? .

The one time i was on a surface ship, we were warned not to smoke the hemp ropes. Apparently some of the bosun mates will cut an inch or two of line, put it in apipe and smoke it. I have no idea if the high is real or placebo, but they report it works.

Oxygen-deprivation can do that.​

Then one of the kids in our indoc class went and cut himself two inches of nylon rope and tried to smoke that. After he got out of sickbay, he was written up for being dumber than a bag of hammers.

Hemp is generally bred for longer fibers, which naturally results in lower THC concentrations. The more energy the plant uses to produce those longer fibers, the less energy it has to produce the flowering buds where the THC is concentrated. Even with plants bred with high THC concentration for recreational use, the stems that contain the fibers are often discarded by the end user, as there is little THC in that part of the plant. Where hemp is grown for industrial use, there are also usually laws that limit the THC content allowed. Once those fibers are processed for industrial purposes (i.e. producing rope) the extremely small amount of THC that might have been contained there is likely gone entirely, especially if there is any heating of the fibers when processed (THC is released by heat before the plant material reaches its ignition point).

Having seen sailors get high on oregano, i do not find this idea too terribly difficult to swallow.

Most hemp contains so little THC that it isn't practical to get high from it. I doubt there is enough THC in a hundred feet of hemp rope to get a mouse stoned; but inhaling any smoke can make people light-headed - as can simply modifying one's breathing pattern by breathing through an empty pipe or a straw, so the opportunity for idiots to fool themselves into thinking they are getting high is definitely there.

The smoke from nylon rope will likely give you a wicked buzz, but it is more like sniffing glue than smoking cannabis. And it is sufficiently toxic that you would have to be both lucky and incredibly stupid to try it twice (the lucky part being that you didn't do enough of it to kill you the first time).
