European Elections: 9 Scariest Far-Right Parties Now In The European Parliament

One has a leader with a swastika tattoo, one wants to rid his entire country of Muslims, another has a founder who suggested releasing the Ebola virus on migrants. This is the class of 2014, the parties set to enter the European Parliament as part of the Union's most eurosceptic, far right, anti-immigrant intake of all time.

With Europe's economic problems (concentrated in the south), increasing Muslim population and the rising tensions Europeans are having with this community and the anti-immigrant attitudes that are increasing, and terrorist incidents, could we witness a new rise of fascism in Europe? I'm sure the Russian actions are pushing Europe further to the right as well. It's certainly not helping. It is a dangerous mix of elements that could push Europe sharply to the right and is already doing so to some extent.

What does everyone think?

Parts of Europe were moving rightwards long before Putin started acting up. There is a real danger, but I think the probability is still rather low.

I doubt actual fascism will rear its hoary head again. Hyper-nationalism, however? Yes, there's a real threat.

But what really is the significant difference between hyper-nationalism and fascism? Is it that this hyper-nationalism is in a democratic rather than authoritarian context?

The problem as I see it is that I don't think democracy and authoritarianism are mutually exclusive. Perhaps they are strange bed-fellows given the historical context, but I have no problem imagining an authoritarian democracy. It merely relies on an authoritarian mindset in the electorate.

If hypothetically one of these hyper-nationalist parties came to control a European parliament, would the distinction between that and fascism be a mere technicality?

The irony is that these native Europeans are worried about a stubbornly authoritarian religion (Islam) and may have to use more authoritarianism than they want to stop it from spreading.

I don't CARE if people insult me or call me bigoted. I care about what I think will happen from this demographic trend to the politics and culture of Europe. Stay to the facts and don't character assassinate.

I am out of my depth with regards to international politics, but might not the specter of Putin's Russia serve to unite the rest of Europe and actually result in less hyper-nationalism?

Now, one thing I've always thought was overdue was a sort of Pan-Europeanism. Perhaps the dual specter of Putin Russia and Muslim immigration could push Europe in that direction.

I don't know.

On the other hand, Europeans have a knack for Balkanization that always seemed bizarre from my American perspective. Just looking at all the separatist movements in Spain.

What does it profit you to fight authoritarian encroachment by becoming an authoritarian state yourself?

You would at least get your own culture's preferences of restrictions.

It's American tax dollars that have helped fascists get into power in Ukraine. Russia has historically been a nation that has fought fascism.
Have you even read any of Putins speeches? This is just getting idiotic. Americans put neo Nazis into power in the Ukraine then blame Russia for helping fascists. Is it going to get any more idiotic??

Besides, the good authoritarianism is temporary, to prevent the bad authoritarianism. Once the bad authoritarianism is stamped out, the good authoritarianism can be rolled back. Just like the US is doing. Still.

The Russian propaganda uses the word "fascist" the same way that Ukrainian regime uses the word "terrorist". It's just a term to pigeonhole and dehumanize anyone who criticises Russia. The word fascist has become tainted by propagandists and is not an accurate reflection of what is going on in Ukraine or in Europe for that matter.

Yes, there is a worrisome right wing nationalist trend in Europe. But actually, a lot of them are fans of Putin and would very much like to break away from EU altogether. Look at Hungary for example.

The US is more in danger of moving towards fascism than Europe.

There are potential Brown Shirts all over the US. There are seething irrational hatreds everywhere. And shrinking opportunity for the young.

But fascism will come to the US, if it does, at the ballot box. The way Hitler initially came to power.

Russia historically fought fascism by being a totalitarian dictatorship. Stalin was the hero of anti-fascist Russia, yet he slaughtered more of his own people than his arch-enemy Hitler. What a wonderful legacy of anti-fascism those Russians have!

Americanism is from see to shinning sea.

The present day Ukrainian fascists are the heirs and supporters of those who fought alongside Hitler in WW2 against Russia.

Many fascists may well be supporters of like-fascists who fought along Hitler but the elected Ukrainian government formed out of coalitions is right of centre not right wing.

No, Europe is still bending over for Jews and Muslims

- In Northern Norway, urologists refuse to perform the procedure.

Jewish Ervin Kohn, director and leader of the Jewish community and Deputy at the Anti-Racist Center, has absolutely no understanding that doctors refuse to circumcise and think they should be fired.

- That doctors sit on their high horse and assume a aunt Sophie attitude full of arrogance that I can't understand whatsoever. Insubordination is actually a dismissal reason according to the Working Environment Act.

"The Norwegians must open their eyes and be a little less ethnocentric," says Kohn, who also claims that ritual circumcision is a human right.

I wonder why he's whining so much, I thought YHWH wanted the rabbis to bite it off.
