In case you missed it

When Ahmed Mohamed went to his high school in Irving, Texas, Monday, he was so excited. A teenager with dreams of becoming an engineer, he wanted to show his teacher the digital clock he'd made from a pencil case.

The 14-year-old's day ended not with praise, but punishment, after the school called police and he was arrested.

"I built a clock to impress my teacher but when I showed it to her, she thought it was a threat to her," Ahmed told reporters Wednesday. "It was really sad that she took the wrong impression of it."

Ahmed was released, no charges will be brought, and so far Ahmed has been invited to the White House, Facebook, MIT, and Harvard.

I guess inventing while Muslim is a thing now?

And now the rest of the story

This arrest, clearly, should never have happened. But one would like to expect at least that the Irving school, after just a cursory glance at the clock and maybe a conversation with Mohamed's engineering teacher, who had praised the project, would realize its mistake. That the school would apologize to Mohamed for humiliating and terrorizing him, acknowledge its mistake, and use it as a teaching moment to discuss racism and profiling.

That is not what has happened. Instead, even after learning that the clock was just a clock built as an educational project, the school suspended Mohamed for three days and sent out this letter to parents on Tuesday:

September 15, 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians,

In Irving ISD and at MacArthur High School, your child’s safety and well-being is always our top priority and we want to maintain open, honest and timely communication with you. If there was ever an imminent threat to your child, we would take immediate and necessary precautions, and we would inform you immediately.

While we do not have any threats to our school community, we want you to be aware that the Irving Police Department responded to a suspicious-looking item on campus yesterday. We are pleased to report that after the police department’s assessment, the item discovered at school didnot pose a threat to your child’s safety.

Our school is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation, and we are handling the situation in accordance with the Irving ISD Student Code of Conduct and applicable laws. Please rest assured that we will always take necessary steps to keep our school as safe as possible.

I recommend using this opportunity to talk with your child about the Student Code of Conduct and specifically not bringing items to school that are prohibited. Also, this is a good time to remind your child how important it is to immediately report any suspicious items and/or suspicious behavior they observe to any school employee so we can address it right away. We will always take necessary precautions to protect our students.

Thank you for your understanding and support of MacArthur High School as we do everything we can for your child's safety.

Sincerely,

Dan Cummings

Well, now that they've got this kid off the streets they can go back to cracking down on kids who have gun shaped pop tarts and finger guns.

is that it?

Funny. They thought it was a bomb, but they didn't act as if it was a bomb. They didn't evacuate the school or let parents know that their children were in mortal danger.

I'm glad to see the internet has thrown its support behind Ahmed. Even President Obama gave the kid a shout-out on Twitter, invited him to bring the clock to the White House.

Cue right-wing outrageplosion...

They don't think pop tart guns are real guns either (not even school administrators are that stupid!) but mock weapons still fall under the "zero tolerance" umbrella and apparently they thought this looked at least as much like a bomb as the half-eaten piece of pop tart looked like a gun.

Here is the clock in question:

I suspect you would have some trouble getting that through airport security.

You have trouble getting hand sanitizer through air port security. Air port security is hardly a standard for the behavior of school official in Irving TX.

And I have yet to see anyone apologize to this boy. Strangers step on your toe in the check line and they apologize. These people know Ahmed and supposedly have a teacher/student relationship with him. Yet not even an oops.

My biggest problem is why (whomever "discovered" this) didn't just say, "Ahmed, what do you have there?" "Oh really, how does it work?"

I am a bit disappointed in the project. He basically took a part old clock and put it inside another case.
At the age of 14 I did much better than that.

Surely the police could have known whether it is a bomb or not by examining it.
If he had a mobile phone on him, could he have been arrested in case he is using it as a detonator.
