Jessica Jones comes to Netflix on November 20

I quite liked this. It's nice to see a hero who sucks at being a hero kind of trying to be a hero. Kilgrave did a good job of a sociopath who really doesn't know any better. I liked his comment about how he has never in his life known if someone actually wants to hang around with him or is just following orders because it is so damn hard to couch his phrases all the time. It put everything he did into perspective and how he was kind of confused as to why Jessica was do angry at him.

The storyline with the cop guy seemed out of place, but that may change when they expand upon it in future seasons. Other than that, pretty much everything was a hit.

He goes by Nuke in the comics and even before I knew that he seemed to be something of a critique of the Captain America type heroes (ie The Big White Guy saves the day) and I think did a pretty decent job at that

At the same time he was totally right about needing to just straight up assassinate Kilgrave, but he was unable to control his violence which can be interpreted as an out of control masculinity. The entire season reads like a particular kickass examination of American Gender norms and how bullshit they are.

I agree about Simpson being a bit out of place. What are the odds that some random cop that Kilgrave sends to do his dirty work just happens to also be a secret supersoldier for a shady organization that was behind Jessica's powers as well?

Also disliked: Malcolm. What a whiny-ass bitch. But I can see him being Jessica's secretary or something in the next season.

Simpson didn't feel out of place to me. It looks to me like they did a good job of setting up a villain for season 2. It seems like he might have been a decent guy if not for the experiments, so I feel sorry for him but hate him at the same time. That's pretty much what you want from a villain, isn't it?

He also did a pretty good job of illustrating that Trish also makes bad decisions, and he helped set up the beginning of Trish's heroic journey.

He served a function in the story and revealed things about both Trish and Jessica's character. That doesn't sound out of place to me.

Lastly, it seems kind of appropriate to put a Frank Miller villain in a Jessica Jones story. He's even more screwed up than she is.

The Netflix shows also owe something of a debt to 80's Frank Miller (Good Frank Miller!) as the Daredevil series was his baby back then. no? And a lot of the story aspects in DD were stuff he created.

Frank now is cray cray, but he was a legend at one point.

Agreed. Daredevil is heavily based on Miller's run on Daredevil in the comics, and Jessica Jones seems to borrow much from Miller in that everyone is nuts, complicated, etc., and the overall tone is quite dark. Also, officer Simpson is based on a character created by Miller.

I also agree that Miller has gone around the bend and is a shadow of his former self.

Isn't that just Bendis though? The storyline for JJ was largely the final story arc for her debut comic in the early 00's

Yes, and the interesting thing is that there isn't enough source material to put a season two together, so season two will have to be original content. I'm actually looking forward to that.

I expect that Simpson and IGH will feature heavily as antagonists in season 2, and that we will get to watch the rest of Trish's hero's journey. I fully expect Rosenberg to continue to explore women's issues and keep things character-focused.

Watched Jessica Jones.

Liked it

Was pissed at her for some of the bonehead things she did, but that's the point, isn't it? She's not Wonder Woman. She's what a real person who suddenly had super powers but the same shitty life would be.

Yes, she made incredibly bad decisions. I don't blame that on her superpowers, but on the emotional damage she endured. She blames herself for the death of her family, and then she had her mind violated by a psychopath with no concept of right or wrong. If she didn't make bad decisions, that would be... hard to believe.

She is damaged goods, and that is exactly what makes me want to cheer for her, and why I get sad when things go bad for her, even when she causes her own misery through bad decisions.

I especially liked her overly complex and inane plan to get herself arrested so that Kilgrave would need to get himself using his powers on camera to break her out of the prison, which was thankfully stopped by her sidekicks. Then, when Kilgrave actually wanted to get the blonde girl out of prison, he just went to the DA and a judge and had them sign a release order and then met her outside.

That was a dumb plan. I mean, James Bond villian level of dumb.

I tell you what, though. She is definitely not getting her deposit back on her apartment.

Uh, yeah.

I got nothing, just yeah. That was dumb.

Furthermore, even if he went to the prison to get her in person, he has shown in the past that he can use mind control to get the cops to erase all the videos. She should have known better, but as I said before, the fact that she makes bad decisions is kind of endearing about her. It makes you cheer more when she gets something right.

Ya, she was just flailing. She knew she had to be a hero and find a way to beat him, but she had no fucking clue how to go about it. It was a great change from all the intricate plans on shows which somehow end up working.
