John McCain Has Cancer

Latest news is McCain is suffering from brain cancer.

McCain is now 80 years old and I doubt he will be running for re-election. He was re-elected in 2016 and so does not have to face an election for several years. One wonders if he may have to resign his office due to health.

Glioblastoma; not good.

Also: Signs and symptoms of glioblastoma are initially non-specific. They may include headaches, personality changes, nausea, and symptoms similar to those of a stroke.

I wonder if that was affecting him during recent hearings, where his behavior seemed "off".

Two years ago this weekend a co-worker lost his very brief battle with this particular type of cancer. He'd had a few vertigo attacks...one which happened when he was driving, so he went to his doctor the next day. The day after that he was in the hospital. A couple weeks later he was gone.

It is always a shame when a John McCain passes before Glenn Beck.

I knew someone with this condition, a good bit younger than McCain. I don't think McCain will ever make it back to his post in the senate, except maybe to say goodbye.

At least from what I heard, it's not a painful death.

Haven't seen any word on his plans as senator. Ted Kennedy died 15 months after a similar diagnosis. He remained in office but only sporadically voted over that time, with no votes during his last 5 months.

I do not think there is any way he will serve out his term. While the tumor was removed according to CNN, even with treatment long term survival low. And he will likely face radiation and chemo, which is exhausting, especially for somebody who is 80.

It is of course sad for his family and himself (although as ZiprHead points out, it is not painful, so it could have been much worse).

But this is PD and so what does it mean politically? I think the governor (Doug Doucey, a Republican) gets to appoint the replacement, and then the election for the seat would be in 2018, opening the Senate map for the Dems a little.

This just straight sucks.

I strongly disagree with McCain politically, but I;'ve met him face-to-face, and honestly, he's a nice guy. I'm so sorry to hear of this...

I bet Mitch McConnell is nice too when you meet him face to face. McCain has been unsophisticated simpleton in his politics. He has been tortured by Vietnamese, and it determined his stance on torture and Russia for the rest of his life. I wonder if survives he would become supporter of cancer research too.

He already survived skin cancer. Remember back in 2000 when his jaw was swollen to the size of his head? Maybe he is out of touch because he did vote last year to block additional cancer research.

I agree with you here. Still don't want to see him have cancer, though.

Dunno about McConnell - I've never met him.

Well, the crass political take on this is that if he can't show up at the Senate and doesn't die or resign his seat, then it's one lost vote for the GOP, so they only need to have two defections instead of three in order to kill any legislation.

If he does die or resign, it means that there's an election with a less popular GOP candidate next year instead of six years from now. Given the complete lack of output from this Senate, that means there's a better chance to get rid of their control before they do much damage.

Oh ya, and cancer bad. Insert caring and heartfelt statement of condolence here.

I think its a fair point though. As the late John Lennon would have put it, these people are professionals in the art of smiling as they kill.

I dunno about Mitch McConnell. Generally speaking, I kinda like turtles but they never show much personality or intelligence. Plus, they are cold blooded and often carry salmonella. In McConnell's case, I'm leaning towards making an exception and saying that he's an out and out unintelligent bastard, period.

Blastomas are bad. Apparently his is treatable, which may prolong his life. Incurable, tho.

I wouldn't wish one on anyone, even Trump.

Maybe they'll ramp up car-t efforts to save the gipper. Sorry, maverick.

Huh? Trump is a vile asshole, I'd have no trouble wishing on him and his sociopathic family.

In spite of my TDS, I can't go there. Not that he doesn't deserve it, or worse.

I can't imagine wishing anything on Trump that would make him a sympathetic figure.

The truth, though...What I would wish on him would be the need for full and accurate disclosure.
Maybe a fetish for telling facts to reporters.
One orgasm per tax form released, including his, his kids', his LLCs' and his lawyers'....

At his age, it was just a matter of which illness would eventually claim him. There's nothing particularly special about cancer in that regard. Old people die.
