It turns out, Richard Nixon committed an act of treason, and LBJ let him get away with it.

That's the only part of the story I find implausible.

George Will Confirms Nixon's Vietnam Treason

Nixon's newly revealed records show for certain that in 1968, as a presidential candidate, he ordered Anna Chennault, his liaison to the South Vietnam government, to persuade them to refuse a cease-fire being brokered by President Lyndon Johnson.

A cease fire and peace agreement may have tipped the election in favor of Hubert Humphrey.

If people started suspecting Presidents could be traitors, they might take a look at other Pres, such as Johnson. Johnson's life, especially his business life, wouldn't withstand much scrutiny.

This had been confirmed a long time ago. Tapes were revealed of Johnson speaking with, iirc, the chief Republican in the senate telling him it was treasonous and it better stop. The Republican acknowledged that is was going on. The peace talks were unsuccessful and many more Americans died because of it. I have a brother that came home with a bullet hole in his leg from that crap.

So, was his plan and conviction to stop the war once he got into office, but it got away from him?

No, it was his plan to win the election.

I can't wait for the Reagan documents and Iran. The Republican Party over the last 40 yrs makes the Democrats look saintly. Yet they keep getting elected!

I don't know. As the years go by, Nixon looks like more and more of a lightweight compared to the Republicans that came after him. Also, Nixon did do some really good things that benefit us to this day (opened relations with China, raised the minimum wage, started the EPA, etc.).

Nixon didn't start Vietnam and he didn't escalate it. Apparently he just kept it going long enough to get elected. Yeah, that's bad, but think of the shit Reagan pulled and then there's Fuckface Cheney and Bush, the two headed combo of evil and stupid that nearly ran us into another Great Depression.

Maybe it's just the passage of time. The first person I was ever aware was President was Gerald Ford. I was around 5 at the time.

The Republicans have a long history of "ends justify means" tactics:
Nixon sabotaged the peace talks. Reagan sabotaged the release of the Iranian hostages, Trump colluded with thirteen Republican leaders to sabotage the entire Obama administration.

Breaking into doctors offices to steal medical records? Granted, that wasn't Nixon, that was the Republican Party. But Vietnam was Nixon, and it doesn't get much more repugnant than that.

Yes, but Humphrey could have as well.

He took over and started bombing another country without authority. It took him over a term to withdraw from Vietnam.

The Republican Party hasn't done very well since '69. The only decent guy got socked with a recession from Reagan's administration.

He basically committed treason and was willing to let other people die so he could win election. I don't care what good he did he was an evil man.
