As I think about that, in a weird kind of fucked up way, she's right. I mean, if the colonials had never started the African slave trade and brought Africans here then there would not have been an evolving issue of civil rights, or probably even a civil war. I know she didn't mean it that way, but we could go even further back we wanted. If the Old World had never shown up in the New, then we could have all skipped this whole "Grand Experiment" and there would be nothing to shed tears over.
But the U.S. has been more than that. We officially welcomed immigrants for a long time, even if society often rejected them once they were here. The same racist assholes then made the same comments that our racist assholes are making now. The fact is, America was never as they pictured it. It's also not headed in that direction. The country these evangelical conservatives want never truly existed, and it never will. I think we need to use the same argument with them that they have used against countless people of color over the ages. "Go back to your own country". If what you want is a conservative, completely homogenous country, Christian country, go build one. The rest of us aren't going to stop what we're doing because you never stop bitching. Shut up or put up. Go make yourselves you libertarian heaven and leave the rest fo us alone.
P.S. Don't call us when you fail utterly.
