When will you Yanks start campaigning for the 2020 election? 1st Jan 2017 or earlier?
It not like I don't get totally bored and driven wire happy by the constant references even here in Oz.
We even had your damn debates live here in Oz. :help: (Yes I know our Telly is appalling but even so).
And we will have your vote counting live too!
Is it possible that you could try to make it less > 700 days next time? In Oz an election > 50 days drives us barmy.

Pretty please?

Well, the French election season is now getting underway.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_presidential_election,_2017
The next French presidential election is scheduled to be held in April and May 2017.
Incumbent president François Hollande is eligible to run for a second term.

Hollande may not run due to low favorability ratings. Stay tuned.

We have already begun.

What's a yank? When I see the term, it reminds me of the damn northern Yankees who think the civil war is over, as opposed to southern rebels who thinks Robert E Lee should come back and have a do over. Then, there's the brief fleeting thought that there's a baseball reference hanging in the balance. Next, as I consider the context, you seem to say it as if you're referencing all Americans of the US, but then I speculate that maybe (perhaps) there's a connotation of sorts that's ready to rear its ugly head--either that or it's a particular subset of Americans you're referring to. Yes, there's probably some language barrier issue holding me back from perfecting my interpretation of exactly what you mean when you refer to us as yanks. So, what is a yank?

Outside the US, all US-Americans are considered Yankees or Yanks.

And to answer the OP question, the serious talk about the next presidential election starts shortly after the midterm elections (in this case, November 2018) and most of the candidates crystallize out during the following year (2019).

The first rumblings in the press, first candidates to announce, probably shortly after the 2018 midterms. Beginning of primary campaigns (candidates start regularly making public appearances, speeches) probably around August 2019 give or take. First debates for the primaries around September or October of 2019. First voting, the Iowa Caucus, around January of 2020.

Serious campaigning will not start until six months into 2017. The first half of 2017 will be an in depth replay of the 2016 vote, explaining how the looser was actually the winner but had it stolen (check the aftermath of the 2000 election), analysis of what each candidate did wrong and/or right, why people voted as they did, how any errors in campaigning can be corrected for the next election, why and/or where the polls were so wrong or right, etc.
