The macro world is deterministic, like it or not, therefore a ''defense'' is not needed. The things that need defending are beliefs in an invisible, undetectable entity throwing ''luck'' in the direction the true believer.

So now there's partial determinism.
What happens at the boundary between micro and macro?
Is global warming part of the macro/deterministic model?

QM has yet to be reconciled with macro scale physics. We have physics of scale. We have something like 8 or 9 interpretations of quantum with at least four of these being deterministic.
But none of this helps to establish a case for luck or favour coming your way due to the intervention of the goddess Fortuna, the God of the Bible, the Spirits of the Wind and Rain or whatever else is currently in favour.

Luck is worth believing in because you can convince yourself that luck is coming with tiny rituals and then make it happen through positivity and confidence. Like when I used to smoke I always put the foil into the cellophane when I opened a pack. Every time I took out the pack I avoided one upside down cigarette and checked to see if the foil was still in the cellophane. It was a shiny reminder that luck was coming and I think it worked because I thought it would work.
The power of self persuasion warps reality in my opinion. Like dwelling on the notion that there is no luck and never having any. Of course there is no luck, but believing that there is luck is a psychological magic trick that always works if one commits fully to it. I see it as an advantage, as unreal as it actually is. Putting foil in cellophane and turning a cigarette upside down makes perfect sense. I can totally see why people who do that are generally more prosperous, with more attractive mates. Lucky cigarettes work. Breaking the ritual can make terrible things happen. Seen it happen. Once you start you have to do it forever. I guess that is a downside.

Perhaps our guardian angels are sleeping on the job. Or they are incompetent. They aren't doing much of a job caring for poor, hungry and starving....or most likely; they don't exist.
